Publisher's summary

A new year, 1917, is dawning, and the Great War that ravages the world shows no sign of abating. Answering the siren call of Egypt once more, Amelia Peabody and her family arrive at their home in Luxor to learn of a new royal tomb ransacked by thieves. Soon an even more disturbing outrage concerns the intrepid clan of archaeologists: the freshly and savagely slain corpse of a thief defiling the ancient burial site.

Yet this is nothing compared with the lethal fate that threatens Ramses. Besieged by the British and defended by formidable Turkish and German forces, the fortified seaport of Gaza guards the gateway to the Holy Land. Answering a call he cannot refuse from British military intelligence, Ramses must journey to this ancient, fabled city to undertake a mission as personal as it is perilous. Death will surely be his lot if he is caught or exposed. Meanwhile, Ramses' wife, Nefret, guards a secret of her own....

Once again the incomparable and best-selling author carries us to a breathtaking realm of ancient wonders and crumbling splendor - from the hectic bustle of the Cairo markets to remote, sand-swept corners of the Egyptian desert where the gods of antiquity sleep. Returning visitors to the world of Amelia Peabody will be enthralled by the latest mesmerizing adventure from the award-winning grandmaster, and newcomers will succumb to her wiles as they are caught up in the tantalizing spell of the remarkable Elizabeth Peters and The Golden One.

Unabridged! Yay!

As an appreciative reader of the Amelia Peabody series I was thrilled to see this book in it's unabridged form. The performance by Barbara Rosenblat is unequaled in my listening experience. And the story is fun, humorous and interesting as are almost all in this series.
Please continue to petition Audible to skip the abridged versions of this series or any other for that matter!

Another great story

Another wonderful story about the Emerson family. Barbara Rosenblatt handles all of the voices as she always does - with skill and continuity. I did notice a couple of times where she got her voices mixed up, but they were minor and lasted only a moment.

The Emersons have three major issues, that are, of course, intertwined. Helping a former enemy, bringing another to justice, facing another minor enemy, and helping with a major find. Add to this Ramses' involvement in WWI, and the plot twists as always.

The plot does get a little confusing as right as you are invested in one set of problems, the Emersons leave all that behind to refocus on an entirely different set of problems. Be willing to jump with them - it all comes out all right in the end.

I've read and listened to this book many times, and will continue to do so.

Another excellent listen!

This was a fun listen - some drama but a bit of relief from the previous book. The narration was as awesome as usual. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

Real treat

You are within 5minutes completely in the story and that doesn't change until the last words are spoken.
Looking forward to the next book

terrific as always but ...

I've been an ardent fan of Amelia Peabody Emerson for decades and this yarn was one of the best.
Barbara Rosenblatt was, as always, absolute perfection BUT for some reason the entire production was done at about 60% volume. I like to have audiobooks playing whilst I do housework, cook, quilt, and in general roam around the house. For this book (and ONLY this book -- I'm an enthusiastic and long-term Audible reader) the volume was too low to allow me this. This really impacted my enjoyment of what was otherwise a terrific book. Did anyone else have this problem?

Did Anything Really Happen?

Took me so long to get through this book because I had to keep going back & relistening. Just didn’t keep my attention. Nothing really happened. Very boring. The narrator is great in terms of her ability to do voices. But she also makes smacking mouth noises. I take breaks between these books because the mouth smacking gets so annoying by the end of a book.

Another winner!

I just love Barbara Rosenblat's narration...her various voices are so consistent and well done! Amazing how after 11 books I'm still hypnotized by the Emerson's escapades. EP so involves the reader in action packed intertwined plots and also we become emotionally involved with the wonderful characters and fabulous setting. Has kept me sane to escape to Cairo during Covid.

I've read all of the Amelia Peabody's books so far and they've all been getting better and better.
