Publisher's summary

In the inhospitable lands of the Utah Territory, during the winter of 1888, thirty-seven-year-old Deborah Tyler waits for her husband, Samuel, to return home from his travels as a wheelwright. It is now the depths of winter, Samuel is weeks overdue, and Deborah is getting worried.

Deborah lives in Junction, a tiny town of seven Mormon families scattered along the floor of a canyon, and she earns her living by tending orchards and making work gloves. Isolated by the red-rock cliffs that surround the town, she and her neighbors live apart from the outside world, even regarded with suspicion by the Mormon faithful who question the depth of their belief.

When a desperate stranger who is pursued by a Federal Marshal shows up on her doorstep seeking refuge, it sets in motion a chain of events that will turn her life upside down. The man, a devout Mormon, is on the run from the US government, which has ruled the practice of polygamy to be a felony. Although Deborah is not devout and doesn’t subscribe to polygamy, she is distrustful of non-Mormons with their long tradition of persecuting believers of her wider faith.

But all is not what it seems, and when the Marshal is critically injured, Deborah and her husband’s best friend, Nels Anderson, are faced with life and death decisions that question their faith, humanity, and both of their futures.

Unusual ploy

Not knowing much about Mormons, especially the first who traveled east to Utah, the idea of this novel intrigued me. I found the plot realistic and believable, the characters rich and the narrative perfect for this book. I greatly enjoyed it and will read more of Ann Weisgarber’s work.

I dont remember why I added this to my reading list and it was actually pretty good story. A little different than what I useually go for but a good piece of historical fiction.

Rich descriptions and believable dialogue

The Glovemaker is everything I love about historical fiction. The storytelling is impeccable, with believable characters and rich descriptions that transported me to Utah Territory in the winter of 1888. The dialogue especially caught my ear. I suspect that the author spent a great deal of time reading old letters and journals to get it right.

A bit slow but great story!

I felt that some parts did drag and it was a bit repetitive, as other reviewers have noted. However, the story itself was compelling and I enjoyed the narration!

non-stop page Turner

this book moved me in a way I almost can't explain. thinking about the people that I've lost that I was unable to have final moments with. I think I had always hoped that they would have had some part of me or thoughts of me so that they never thought that they were alone

Pretty melodramatic

Good narration, but too much time spent on main character's anxiety about what would happen. Predictable ending

A nice book for a quick read.

I found the subject of this book intriguing but the delivery was clunky. In some cases too much detail was provided and the story dragged and in other parts there wasn’t enough detail.

What a gripping story!

Absolutely loved this book. The narration was beautiful and the story kept me engaged. A unique Utah setting and time in history makes for a different book than I’m used to. I will definitely be checking out more books by Weisgarber.

Very interesting book

This story held my interest. I loved the characters as the author revealed them. One of the best historical fiction books I have read in a long time!
