Publisher's Summary

DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but she has more tolerance for her hippy neighbours than most. When one of them goes missing, she feels duty-bound to find out what happened. It's an easy job to track the young woman down to a country retreat where aspiring authors gather to work through their novels. It gets complicated when a body is discovered and Vera's neighbour is found with a knife in her hand.

Calling in the team, Vera knows that she should hand the case over to someone else, but the investigation is too tempting. Then another body is found, and Vera suspects that someone is playing games with her.

Country house murder mystery

A quintessential country house murder mystery from the current queen of crime drama.
A crime committed in an enclosed location, with a personal connection to Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope , set amongst literary figures, ensures a drama which draws the reader into an unfamiliar world .
The plot weaves in & out so that each character in turn becomes victim & suspect. A superb read.

Great listen

I love the series Vera so I bought this book and I wasn't disappointed. You really get in to the characters and places. I love the narrator Charlie Hardwicks voice and it's great that she is a geordie as after watching Vera it wouldn't sound right in any other accent.

Another great story narrated by Charlie Hardwick.

I have read the books; listened to them and watched the series.

my conclusion, lived listening to Charlie's genuine "Geordie' accent - she made the story zing and come alive!

Involvment makes the detective investigating real

The interaction between the detective and her neighbours and the differences there are between them make this a fascinating exploration of how we are challenged by those who do not think like us and overcome our prejudices. We are in there with Vera and her battles to find the solution

Excellent!

Any additional comments?

I'd not read a Vera Stanhope book, just seen the television series with the brilliant Brenda Blethyn, so wasn't sure what to expect. It was excellent.

A real old fashioned whodunit (that I guessed completely wrong) with strong characters and superb narration. You could, at times, almost smell the sea off the Northumberland coast.

I'll definitely be looking for more, and I hope they all have the same narrator.

Didn't see that coming!!!

Good story that keeps you guessing right up until the end.

Vera is called upon by her hippy neighbour Jack to track down his partner Joanna who has uncharacteristically left him a note and gone off for a couple of days.

Vera tracks her down to a writers retreat, as she walks around the outside of the house and knocks on the door there's a scream. She has just stumbled into a murder scene and is her neighbour Joanna responsible?

This is a well crafted story. There are quite a few complicated characters to get know, and anyone of them could be the murderer! I certainly kept changing my mind as to who this could be.

Charlie Hardwick is a perfect narrator her voices and accents spot on. She has Vera down to a tee.

I look forward to the next in the series and It's a pity that not all the Vera Stanhope books are available on Audible but I hope that Charlie Hardwick is the narrator for those that are.

Recommended.

Gripping

Gripping complicated story from first chapter to the last.
Very well written even if a bit drawn out at times.

I Love Vera!

This book is more powerful on screen & we have come to see Vera ‘in person.’

This book was well read, but I was slightly disappointed in the story, it wasn’t as strong as I was expecting.

I am also upset that Audible, does not, as yet, have all of the Vera series.

However, I can’t wait to read another!
