Publisher's summary

Unemployed, blacklisted, and pregnant, Sophie Scaife's life is totally upside down. Her relationship with publishing magnate Neil Elwood is on the rocks. Her best friend's career is igniting. And Sophie is afraid that she'll make one of the toughest decisions of her life alone.

When a devastating diagnosis forces Neil to return to London, Sophie throws caution to the wind to follow her heart across the Atlantic. Keeping a scorching affair as red-hot in sickness as it was in health is a challenge, even for two lovers as inventive as Sophie and Neil. But Sophie is more than willing to try anything her sir commands, and their fantasies of control become a welcome refuge from the daily stress of illness.

While Neil's wealth and privilege make adjusting to her new situation easier, Sophie finds herself rebuilding her life around an uncertain future. And while both of them face the changes between them head-on, they're all too aware that their happiness may be fleeting - and that Sophie could lose Neil forever.

Unfortunate purchase!

I purchased books one and two together. After not being able to finish the first book due to content, narration and storyline, I realized my mistake. Never purchase all books without first reading the initial one in the series. So I thought since I had it, I should give it a shot. I actually was hoping the second book was better. This is not a spoiler since within the first hour you find out she gets an abortion (the procedure of which is discussed in detail), he has cancer and her gay girlfriend is not there to support her emotionally. Now I am a firm believer in equality for same sex partners and equal rights and women's right to choose even though if I ever get pregnant I will choose to keep it just because I do not wish to have an abortion. That being said, this story was just disturbing. The book went from bad (book 1) to worse (book 2). After that I had no interest in listening at all. It seemed like this writer tried to touch up on everything that could stir up some kind of strong feeling or emotion in her readers including homosexuality, cancer, and abortion. Bad idea if you ask me especially so in a romance novel. No one purchases a romance in the hopes of it being disguised under drama. Romance is supposed to provide escapism for its readers and not tragedy and realism. So if this is what you are looking for, by all means please purchase. As for others, RUN away from this book. A complete waist of your time.

Be warned, detailed abortion...

I'm not opposed to some drama weaved into my romance. Where would a good book be without a little angst, after all? However, this one went above and beyond. I'm pretty sure this book has been grossly miscategorized altogether. Despite the steamy sex scenes, this is not what a rational individual would call an erotic romance.

Several things put me off about this book. I think the author could have done much better by avoiding the abortion storyline completely. It was graphic and unnecessary and felt like a personal statement the author wanted to put in for her own reasons.

The heroine decided to have a QUICKY abortion (even though she could tell her partner was very conflicted about it, she didn't care enough to have any real conversation about it or truly consider his feelings at all) because she didn't want a baby. She referred to children as gross, dirty, grubby, etc. There was even a passage where she told her partner that she used to protest against abortion and his reply was "...and I used to vote with the Conservative party. We all do stupid things when we are young." As if that line itself weren't offensive enough to half of the US population, the doctor who performed the abortion referred to the baby as "the product of conception." I found that disgusting. It's a BABY. A human life. Not a "thing" to be discarded so as not to upset one's carefree lifestyle. The callous way this situation was handled destroyed any liking I had come to feel for the characters in the first book. It turned the "heroine" into a selfish, vapid, immature brat for me. Abortion should not be thought of as a post-coitus form of birth control, and that's pretty much what happened here. It was unsettling and unnecessary to the story. Speaking as someone who had to make a horrible decision to have my second pregnancy terminated due to medical complications, this whole scenario turned my stomach.

Needless to say, I will not be continuing on with this series. Since I feel like I've just read more of a hard left political statement (a ringing endorsement for Planned Parenthood, if you will) than an erotic romance, it's a grievous waste of my time as a reader in search of escapist entertainment. Save your politics for MSNBC. My money will be better spent supporting other authors. To each his own, but this mess was not to my taste AT ALL.

DON'T BOTHER<br />

Didn't even finish reading it!!!! I was disappointed by the narrating. It was hard listening to that fake accent. NO ONE TALKS LIKE THAT! Doesn't do the English accent justice.

TRIGGER WARNING

What would have made The Girlfriend better?

nothing

What could Abigail Barnette have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Look, I don't knock others' decisions. I don't have a problem with any author choosing to tackle a difficult topic. However, Audible NEEDS to warn readers that such things will be included, in a VERY detailed way.

What about C. J. Bloom’s performance did you like?

I liked how she voiced Sophie. Her voice for Neil sucks.

Hard review to give

I have really mixed emotions about this book. Hopefully no spoilers here. I really like Sophie and Neal's story but there is so much that I cannot recommend. Thus my low star count. Abortion with seemingly minimal guilt by a girl raised as a catholic, multiple partner sex with I believe more to come in the following books--probably same sex as Neal swings both ways--all of this definitely puts me off in a major way. The story of his illness and how awful it was seemed quite realistic and the author writes well. I'm really sorry I ever started this series even though I will probably finish it despite my distaste of some of the content. I like erotic romance but prefer monogamy and at least some moral values. The only ones Sophie seems to have is not being a gold-digger and standing by her man in sickness. For someone as selfish and immature as she seems to be in many areas, this seems unlikely . The age difference is huge!! The stark novels , this man series , and the crossfire series (my favorite) are all much much much better!!

Graffic Abortion, Cancer, Sharring

Great book if you have no morrals. This book is beyond taboo. Don't bother hoping it gets better because it didn't! Sadly you can tell the author is a great writer yet totally missed the mark.

Sexy and Emotional

The Girlfriend put me on the emotional rollercoaster from the very beginning. I went from being so happy, to turned on, to wanting to cry all within a few pages and it continued that way the entire time! I am eager to get right into book 3!

The narration was good, just like the first in the series. I wish the author had chosen a male narrator to handle Neal's voice but it is still good without.

Steamy, emotional, but so lovely

This book follows up nicely as the sequel to The Boss. I enjoyed every moment of this journey for Sophie and Neil and feel this cemented their relationship into a bond that cannot be severed. I didn't enjoy the Amir stuff... Just found it to be weird. But, to each their own. Also glad Emma is coming around to realizing Sophie loves Neil and Emma is happy for her dad's happiness.
