Story
Frank's back on the bridge, dodging sprawling vines as thick as his secrets, crushing the dark fruit beneath his soles as he flees. He must catch the train. Her voice traps him. The child he cannot ignore. "I watched you, Uncle Frank. I saw what you did." He can hear the train's whistle. She clings to him, holding him tight as the horror approaches....

Story
Millions of threads so thin as to be invisible, so vaporous as to be ductile, drift through the classroom, emitting a chill and leaving a sense of unease. Hidden deep in their cloaks, the Blue Lights analyze the odors that cling to the individual cells of every child, from the top of each little head to the bottom of their ticklish feet and every dark secret place in between, from their gathering brains to their blood-soaked spleens. One girl feels dizzy; one boy throws up.

Evil rules the mean streets in many guises, waiting in the shadows along the crumbled edges of the mega-cities, where murder is the only crime that leaves a trace for lesser violent acts are simply not reported. Children, the elderly, the slightly and severely damaged make up the homeless. The weak and the helpless are deemed beyond salvation and beneath contempt by all but the strongest and the cruelest who see them as a source of sustenance.

Story
I am going to die here. My name is Mindy Mason; I’m a student from the University. I volunteered for one experiment; it was to be for one day only. I want to go home now. I hear cries, screams, and shrieks in the night. Some of the voices sound as if they are coming from the pillow under my head, others as if from a radio behind a door in a far room, and yet others come from my dreams, thus layering my terror. I know Wendy has a knife; perhaps she has killed again. How can I stop her?

Publisher's Summary
Life played its horrible games with the girl. As she grew up she devised clever places to hide - inside and outside of her mind. She was tricked by her own illusions; she was caught in traps of her own creation. It began with a kidnapping, a locked room, and the broken doll that was more than a plaything…and always, in the shadows, the dangerous painting from her past waited, threatening to expose her.

Intelligent and dripping with emotions
This is a well thought out tale, dripping with emotions. I like the way the author leaves you somewhat baffled in the beginning, you see pieces of the puzzle, never the whole story. Then, when all gels together you are struck by the intensity of it all. I went back through it a second time, now fascinated by the clues that were laid out. To me, that's a mark of a good story, something intelligent that makes you want to revisit it again and again.

Seriously Creepy
I am not normally a big fan of horror short stories... mainly because they don't usually evoke any kind of emotional reaction from me. This, on the other hand, did. It was as creepy as all heck. The narrator's voice catches this content of this tale perfectly. I can highly recommend this piece by Dona and I am looking forward to hearing more from her in the future. Please note: I solicited and received a review copy of this work. However, the opinions expressed are my own and were not required or incentivized by the author or narrator.

Haunting
When I started this book I said to myself I wonder what crazy train ride Dona Fox is going to take me on now! Well this story was as haunting, intense and twisted as I expected. The story of a young girl betrayed by her father sucks you right in and does not let you go! As with all the books I’ve listened to by this author It doesn’t feel like a short story. Everything is laid out for you and you will soon be putting all the pieces together.
Barbara Nevens Taylor did a great job upping the creepy factor, definitely reccomend

Very dark subject matter here. Written from the perspective of a girl who's been through some nasty stuff and had to cope with it. Really well-written, and a moving piece. Dona Fox stories always paint a vivid picture in my mind. Very good narrator too!

This was a different cup of tea.
What can I say about this short story? This is definitely not my usual read/listen to, so I wasn't sure what to expect. On that note, I feel strange leaving a high rating for such a horrible story--situation-wise, that is. It was scary in that I couldn't imagine ever going through this type of situation, much less personally knowing someone who has. And it was well-written that it was easy to imagine what this girl must have gone through just based on the author's vivid descriptions. Plus, the narrator had the best/creepiest voice that went so well with this story. The ending made me think of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper."

A different kind of horror
The author, Dona Fox, has a way of drawing her readers into a world filled with horror. In this story, the horror isn't a monster in the true horror sense, but still a monster that is actually worse than the supernatural kind.
A young girl is abused by first her father, then her uncle. The tale is told from her viewpoint and Ms. Fox really makes you feel all of the emotions in this short story. I would recommend that if a person has a history of abuse, this might not be the best story to read. But, if you love creepy tales that scare using your imagination, along with great writing, then give this short story a try.
The narrator was perfect for this story and added a lot to the creepiness of the story and to my enjoyment of it. I received a copy of this audiobook from the author, but chose to review it.

My review
This is a great short read and listen for anyone who loves horror or dark fiction.
We meet a young girl who has been betrayed by the who person she always thought was there to protect her. However, she ends up losing her soul and her mind in end.
The poor child! But I loved the book, for short listen it certainly grabs your attention and doesn’t let go.
