Publisher's summary

When Angela was young, before she came to realize she had a rare ability, she was a rather ordinary girl. At least, that was what everyone said. But Angela is anything but ordinary. The daughter of a meth addict, she is convinced she was born a freak. Haunted by an abusive childhood, she was forced to become a woman far too soon. And in the process, she became more.

Angela juggles multiple jobs to live a secluded life in a cabin in the mountains. But she also lives a secret life, right under everyone's noses. Because her family's bloodline carries the ability to recognize killers, she adopts a solitary, violent existence in service of her own, personal mission in life. When Angela unexpectedly finds herself the prey of a group of international terrorists, she is the only one who knows the truth of what they are about to do. She might look like an unlikely hero. She might also be our only hope.

Absolute Garbage

I haven’t read a Terry Goodkind book in many years. A few hours into this book and I am remembering exactly why.
I’m no prude, and I’m definitely not the type to clutch my pearls, but this book is a dumpster full of flaming trash. Repeated scenes of graphic rape, degradation, and torture are so grotesquely overused and shoved down the reader’s throat, that the book is a complete bore. It’s full of contrived scenes that, in my opinion, do nothing to develop the characters, propel the story, or communicate any meaningful theme. The narration is decent, but nothing can save this material.
I have wasted five hours of my life on this book. I have decided to call it quits and return it. Save yourself the credit and your time.

Intense and heart-pounding!

This book was intense! I loved it. Angela is fascinating in so many ways. I love how bad-ass she is, and for all of the right reasons! The story sucked me in and had my blood pressure up, but not in that maddening way that I hate. My heart raced, and I had fun learning what made Angela tick, and wondering what she could possibly do next. I got angry right along with her and felt her frustrations, but then, Wow! I can't tell you too much about that, without major spoilers. She's awesome! For those of you who like his Sword of Truth series, you'll be interested to know that Kahlan in the Con Dar is a children's tale in comparison.

I do not understand all of the rave reviews!

Would you try another book from Terry Goodkind and/or Elisabeth Rodgers?

If this is representative of his writing, then absolutely not.

Would you ever listen to anything by Terry Goodkind again?

No!

Have you listened to any of Elisabeth Rodgers’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I found the performance to be quite good, it was the writing that was unacceptable.

What character would you cut from The Girl in the Moon?

It isn't a matter of cutting characters. What they need is character development. The book also needs at least one character that you like and can identify with.

Any additional comments?

The over the top graphic details of the killings and rape scenes were completely unnecessary, any good writer can construct a scene that gives you just enough details so that the reader can visualize what is transpiring. I got to the point where I was so tired of not caring about any of the characters and having the endless graphic violence shoved down my throat I stopped listening after about six hours. I would like Terry Goodkind to somehow give me back the six hours of my life wasted listening to his book.

Ugh

He really let the xenophobia and sexism fly in this one. Some of this book was damn near impossible to get through. Only my love for the Sword of Truth series kept me going.

Had to quit on this one.

Too violent. Too bloody. Too much pleasure in it by the lead character. I am disappointed in the author. This work is beneath him. It is literary snuff porn. Zero stars and a waste of money unless you like that sort of thing. I wish I could wash my brain out after the little I managed to get through. Unfortunately I can't leave this review without at least one star, a flaw in the rating system in my opinion.

Terry Goodkind, you blew this one!

Excellent story and plot

I couldn't stop listening. The main character was unique and the story was different. I am so sad that the author has passed and will no longer be weaving his magic with words.

A Fast-Paced Modern-Day Adventure with a Kick-Ass

I have been a Terry Goodkind fan since reading his epic fantasy series, The Sword of Truth, but never ventured a title by him outside of that series...until now. The Girl in the Moon is a complete 180 degree departure from The Sword of Truth, BUT there are similarities in his precise writing and how he writes his female characters.

Right from the beginning of the book, I knew I was in for more strong writing from Terry Goodkind who has a unique ability to balance description and character development within an Action-Adventure story. His writing draws a reader in and immediately plops you in the middle of the action. To illustrate this, the first paragraph sets up everything,

"When Angela glanced up and saw him out in the parking lot beyond the neon beer sign hung in the bar's small front window, her first thought was to wonder if this was the night she was going to die."

The Girl in the Moon is the story of Angela Constantine, who as a girl comes from a rough family life (or lack of it) filled with abuse, a meth-adict mother, and many issues. But all of this is key to understanding how she evolves into the kick-ass, strong character she becomes in this book. She is an unlikely hero, but a hero nonetheless. And I LOVED it!

A final note: There are some rough scenes, like a gang rape and intense violence, so this book is not for all readers.

Heavy in political messaging.

Terry’s Sword of Truth/Confessor series had me hooked, but The Girl in the Moon was inundated with political innuendo.

Editor on Holiday?

So the performance was good and probably what kept me listening. The story was too graphic, repetitive and the political views immature and overdramatized. The concept of the story was fresh and a good editor could have made it really shine.
