Publisher's summary

Her eyes are wide open. Her lips parted as if to speak. Her dead body frozen in the ice...She is not the only one.

When a young boy discovers the body of a woman beneath a thick sheet of ice in a South London park, Detective Erika Foster is called in to lead the murder investigation.

The victim, a beautiful young socialite, appeared to have the perfect life. Yet when Erika begins to dig deeper, she starts to connect the dots between the murder and the killings of three prostitutes, all found strangled, hands bound, and dumped in water around London.

What dark secrets is the girl in the ice hiding?

As Erika inches closer to uncovering the truth, the killer is closing in on Erika.

The last investigation Erika led went badly wrong...resulting in the death of her husband. With her career hanging by a thread, Erika must now battle her own personal demons as well as a killer more deadly than any she's faced before. But will she get to him before he strikes again?

Good New Series

Plenty of twists and turns await the listener in this gritty serial thriller. Debut books in a series carry the added responsibility of creating a world. The main character needs supporting actors who can sustain our interest and sympathy into future stories. Bryndza succeeds here by populating DCI Foster's squad room with a handful of loyal coppers with back stories we glimpse and want more of. Will Peterson be more than a colleague in future? Stay tuned.

Some of the characterizations are too inconsistent for believability. It's done to obscure the killer, and we know that person is a liar. But everyone can't be unstable. Foster's boss, for example, drags her back to work the case, then he doesn't want her there, then he insists she's the only one who can solve it, and then he's openly hostile again. All this in the course of two conversations. This and other examples hampered my ability to plug into the story fully.

On the plus side, Bryndza takes us around London with ease, making us feel like natives on a crime scene tour. He evokes settings beautifully, setting the stage with juicy imagery we can taste, smell and feel. You will root for Erika Foster from beginning to end. The climactic scene --and I'm not going to spoil it--is one of the best and creepiest I've read in a long while.

Jan Cramer was excellent with the delivery of the story

Okay but a bit frustrating

The story was okay and kept my interest.

I couldn’t get past an experienced investigator not being able to defend herself. I also can’t believe someone so obviously out of control could be a detective. The main character needs work.

Worth the time, but not stellar

In the end, it was worth the listen, however I almost stopped at one point. Sometimes books will be like this, and it much depends on the personality that is listening. The story and characters were worthy of my time looking in the rear view mirror.

Great Book!

Loved the book. Very impressed with the author. Great story, had me guessing all the way through. This is the first mystery/thriller crime solving case that had my attention all the way through. I will be reading more from this author!

Enjoyable Mystery with a Mediocre Reveal

This book was an engaging listen. The ending was a bit lackluster, but it held my attention all the way through, and the narrator was good.

Reeled me in like a fish

My first Erika Foster Crime Thriller. I haven't read anything like this in 30 years. I've been more of a light reader, historical stories and such. Then I read Michelle McNamara's book "I'll be gone in the dark". A mystery. A murder mystery. After finishing that book I knew I wanted more. I checked into Audible and the Erika Foster Crime Thrillers were listed and I chose the first one. Willing to give it a chance. I listened to this driving in my car to and from work. After starting this book, I never wanted to leave my car. The story keeps you intrigued, makes you think you possibly already know the killer but you are never sure. I am now on my second Erika thriller and she's become a favorite person in my life. I love her saucy attitude, her perseverance through ALL the obstacles tossed in her direction. Great read. Enjoy!

Narrator wrecks a good book

I like the story and the characters but the narrator really wrecked it for me. Too bad because I would like to listen to another Erika Foster book. Guess I'll have to get them from the library.
