Publisher's Summary

Every passion has its price...

Journalist Sophie Ryder has been following Emery Lockwood's story since she was a little girl. There has always been something in his haunted eyes that she couldn't resist and now, when she's certain he holds the key to solving a string of kidnappings, she'll do anything to speak to him. Even if it means venturing deep into the seductive world of the Gilded Cuff, a luxurious BDSM club on Long Island's Gold Coast and Emery's personal playground.

From the moment Sophie enters his shadowy, sensual domain, Emery Lockwood knows this tantalizing new little sub was meant to belong to him. However, Sophie wants more from Emery than just pleasure...she wants his past. And that is something he isn't willing to give - no matter who is asking. But every moment he spends with Sophie, Emery feels his control slipping and he knows it's only a matter of time before he surrenders to her heart, body, and soul.

Tormented by their pasts, yet enthralled by nights of the most decadent pleasure neither of them has ever experienced before, will Sophie and Emery be able to find the release that only surrender can bring?

The Gilded Cuff - an awesome read!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Gilded Cuff to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version but the audio version was amazing. As with many other readers I enjoy some spice in the books I listen to or read. The strength of this book lies in the fact that while it is sensual and erotic it is also full of suspense.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Gilded Cuff?

I don't like giving away special moments in a book review - I think that takes away some of the intrigue for those who have not read the book. But I will say that this book has some very special moments that will suit a wide variety of readers

What about Veronica Den’s performance did you like?

I enjoyed Veronica's narration although some of her male voices did at times lack depth.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I don't usually listen to a book in one sitting but the book certainly held my interest.

Any additional comments?

Even if BDSM is not your thing dont let it put you off reading this book. The book is sensual and romantic but a thriller as well.

No puppies were harmed, not a bad effort

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This was a pretty good effort. Interesting enough to make me reverse over sections I missed when I got distracted while listening. That said some of the dialogue and emotional "trauma" was superficial and as a suspense/thriller it is lightweight. It's a romance however, meant to be entertaining and not great literature, in both those aspects it delivers.

Any additional comments?

I had to laugh at some of the reviews. This book is not about BDSM, it plays a small role in the story. Some of the reviewers were shocked by the presence of some aspects of BDSM despite it being specifically mentioned in the overview. Seriously, anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together would know to stay away from books like this if BDSM gives them vapours.

That's it?

What would have made The Gilded Cuff better?

Great backstory...no delivery of any BDSM qualities. Maybe one baby scene as a promo..but that was all. Even the romance wasn't fully explored! Just the angst of the vivid confusing recalls of a confusing, traumatic childhood event in Hero's early childhood! That's all the book consisted of!

Would you ever listen to anything by Lauren Smith again?

Couldn't set myself up for this kind of set-up & fail!

How could the performance have been better?

Ok,given the emphasis of trauma a little more emotion would make it easier to swallow.

What character would you cut from The Gilded Cuff?

The parents should have been better explored..wasted time even giving them a cliff notes notation!

Any additional comments?

Set up as an exploration of a novice to BDSM,never delivered of any kind. Told of a great romance..told of D/s tendencies just no delivery on any front!! Such a disappointment!

Sadist Asshole Drowns Puppy

If the plot of The Gilded Cuff involved a sadist millionaire who loved to drown puppies, most women would be horrified and animal rights groups would protest at every bookstore who sold this book.

Instead, the plot of The Gilded Cuff involves the physical, emotional and sexual abuse of women. Emery (anti-hero) is a damaged, violent man who enjoys inflicting pain, casually striking and chaining women, actions which would be illegal if done to a puppy. Sophie and all the doormats before her, were supposed to be sexually excited by being beaten.

Sophie (24) is a young and naïve journalist, with low self esteem and desperate for male attention. Within 15 minutes of entering a BDSM club, hoping to meet & interview Emery, Sophie is slapped by both Emery and his friend Royce. Instead of running for her life, Sophie goes home with this man who promises to discipline and degrade her.

Judging by his actual actions, rather than the BDSM propaganda about choices and power exchanges, Emery is a self-absorbed, sadist asshole who justifies his revolting treatment of females by using the pity card. Poor Emery was kidnapped and terrorized at the age of 8, so he has the right to inflict pain on others if it makes him feel better. Yuk!

Worse, Sophie is guilt-ridden about her own childhood trauma, and doesn't believe that she deserves to be happy. Sophie becomes the perfect victim to Emery's desire to bully, promoting the belief that women's only purpose in life is to serve men. I can't believe anyone with 2 functioning brain cells or a drop of human kindness would find this story romantic, erotic or entertaining.

no originality

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Some originality and a lead lady that actually has a backbone and doesn't vacillate for the sake of the author filling time in "though" dialogue.

Has The Gilded Cuff turned you off from other books in this genre?

Pretty much - it was a waste of a credit.

What three words best describe Veronica Den’s voice?

Good.

What character would you cut from The Gilded Cuff?

All of them -

Good but....

Where does The Gilded Cuff rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I just did not find it believable that you could get an interview of a very rich man with very dark desires at an sex club. I mean most people will not share with there closest friends but the author would have us believe this man will share his most painful secretes after only one meeting. But I loved the idea of the gold cuffs. Lastly (spoiler!) the ending leaves a few holes and felt rushed.

Would you recommend The Gilded Cuff to your friends? Why or why not?

yes but with the condition you have nothing else available.

What about Veronica Den’s performance did you like?

Great with all but the male lead. Even his friends had more attractive voices.

Hot, Unexpected, Fun

I really loved this story - as wacky as it was.
I do not want to spoil anything so this will be brief.

I love that there was more to this book than a romance. I love the twists and turns that Ms. Smith threw in with action, drama, adventure, and characters I wanted to get to know.

It was hot, it was tender, it was kind of heartbreaking and it was uplifting. I am in for the series
