Publisher's Summary

It's Halloween, and the ghosts of Victorian London are stirring...

Shadows fall across the city as a cold, dreary evening draws in. Jake Shillingsworth, serving boy in London's most notorious inn, The Tattered Crow, is about to discover some ghostly truths.

Hidden eyes watch from empty rooms, and something lurks in the attic above Jake’s squalid room. Shuffles, scratches, and scrapes echo in the dead of night.

When Jake returns from a mysterious errand for his odious master, he soon finds himself thrust into a terrifying adventure. Accosted by a strange old man, Jake hears a bone-chilling tale of a ghost from the past, black magic, and bloody revenge. And as the clock ticks toward midnight, Jake's forced to confront the dark presence lurking in the shadows of The Tattered Crow like a spider waiting in a ghostly web.

The Ghosts of the Tattered Crow is an eerie, short gaslamp fantasy story of ghost-hunting and magic in darkest Victorian London.

Short and fun, but predictable

Here we have a fun little spooky tale, though it is rather on the predictable side.

As always, Hannibal Hills gives a fantastic performance with well-crafted voices, excellent vocal inflections, and perfect tempo shifts.

This is functionally a prequel to The Clockwork Magician, which I recently read and quite enjoyed.
Here we come back to 13-year-old Jake Shillingsworth for a short ghost story.

The author does a good job of building up suspense as he leads up to the final confrontation, and takes an interesting approach to some of the afterlife questions he answers.

However, this is one of those stories that I feel could have really benefited from a wild twist at the end. The kind of twist that completely re-frames the entire story and makes everything mean something different than we thought.

As it is, it's still a fun little tale, it just lacks that something extra to make it a great, memorable experience.

Old World England Paranormal Tale

This was a fun short story of a boy that is told to destroy an evil spirit before midnight or the spirit will eat him. The setting is in an old English tavern and the streets surrounding. The narrator did a great job and was fun to listen to. It's a pretty clean story and not too scary.... you just have the feeling that something is going to jump out at you. Good for the Goosebumps readers and up.

Fantastic

I received this book for free at my request but the opinion is of my own. Jake is a set wrong boy who is not treated well than he is suddenly tasked with an interesting job that he has to complete before the end of Halloween. Killing a ghost shouldn’t be a problem right?

Wanting More!

Another little glimpse into Jakes world and I really do want more. This was a free gift for my opinion and I thought it was totally awesome! Hannibal Hill has really brought these characters to life with great voices and what a splendid ghosty story lol! I would even say a great bedtime story if you have younger children you read too at night. Super fun read.

Perfect for this time of year

I listened on Halloween & it was great! It was shorter than I’d like, but I enjoyed the story and the narration.

Fun Short Ghost Story

This review is for the audiobook format of “The Ghosts of the Tattered Crow” by Eldritch Black and performed by Hannibal Hills.

This title is a short prequel to the longer title, “The Clockwork Magician” that is reviewed in a separate post. In the “The Ghosts of the Tattered Crow”, we are introduced to Jake Shillingsworth and his unfortunate living arrangements with the awful Silas Grumble.

Apparently there are ghosts in the tattered crow, the bar/inn owned by Silas where Jake has the unpleasure of living and working for his stay. Confrontations with the ghosts must be made and Jake is one for the job.

Follow along in this short and pleasant story performed by the talented Hannibal Hills. Hills performs each character so that there is no doubt as to who is saying or doing what. His ability to keep us entertained is done in such a manner that any book would undoubtedly be good if he was the narrator presenting it to us. Great job and fabulous listen. Once finished with this title, go get and listen to “The Clockwork Magician”.

I received this title in exchange for a voluntary honest review.

Awesome!

I listened to this book on Halloween, and what a treat it was! It was a short venture into the world presented, but I'd love to experience more by the author. Plenty of back story and mystery, perfect for the time of year.

Narration was great, I'd definitely listen to more by this narrator.

Intriguing and Stimulatng

An intriguing story of a boy who works at the Tattered Crow whose master is petty and cruel. The story revolves around this boy who wants so much more than his present lifestyle.

An older man stops him and tells a story to get the boy to do his bidding. The boy soon finds out there is more to the story and the truth starts to unfold itself.

A wonderful listen.
