Publisher's Summary

Lad from the streets meets lord of the manor. Both men's lives will be changed forever.

When Sir Alan Watleigh goes searching for sex, he never imagines the street rat he brings home for one last bit of pleasure in his darkest hour will be the man who hauls him back from the edge of the grave. Despite his harsh life in the slums of London, Jem is a bright, cheerful young man. He's also witty, irreverent, glib, and makes Alan laugh - a rare occasion since wartime trauma and the death of his family have made the man a ghost of his former self.

A single night of meaningless sex turns into an offer of permanent employment. Jem acts as Alan's valet, but offers him so much more than polished boots and starched cravats. Just as the men are adjusting to their new living arrangement, news about a former soldier under his command sends Sir Watleigh and Jem on the road to save a child in danger.

The journey brings them closer together as they travel from lust toward love. They rescue the girl from the clutches of an insane surgeon, who is as interested in experimenting on the vulnerable human spirit as he is on physical bodies. Alan realizes his love for Jem when he nearly loses him, but is Alan's love strong enough to risk society discovering the truth about him? And is he strong enough to finally accept his sexual nature?

Delightful and Unexpected

I really enjoyed this sweet story. It is a MM historical story similar to Brook St Thief. The relationship that builds between the MCs is realistic and endearing. Both MCs try to be find their own self worth in the love of the other. The narrator does a fantastic job.

Such Heart-swelling Romance💝

This story has everything!
A brooding, principled, handsome hero who struggles with his wounds and needs.
A delicious, unfettered young man who's wit and beauty barely disguise his wisdom and depth of character.
A sadistic and perverse villain who is in possession of a little girl needing rescuing.
And a lot of ROMANCE with very EROTIC love scenes!

This is a beautifully written love story. It would make any reader sigh with giddiness by the end. It is, obviously, a gay romance. But I wish it were listed next to all the other Historical Romances. More people need to hear it.
Yay for love!!

Other reviewers may not have liked the narrator, but I enjoyed him very much.

Entertaining and sweetly romantic

The narration was quite a pleasure, all the accents and different timbre made all the characters distinctive. The story was entertaining, and romantic, a la Pretty Woman, the trope of the prostitute with a heart of gold definitely shines, and Jem is a jewel. He's lovable, with his quick wit and cheerful attitude, he's pragmatic about his life as a prostitute, and rather see the bright side of life as much as he can. Alan is kind, remorseful and heartbroken with memories of war, and Jem is just the balm his body and soul need to recover. Their adventure to save a child is quite exciting, and their love is really sweet, it was quite moving to see their feelings for each other grow. I love all genres of mm, but this particular historical novel was a pleasure to listen to.

Inconsistent voice acting

The constant switching between character voices for narrated bits was confusing. Sometimes it would take me a whole passage to realize a character hadn't been speaking out loud. Also, the bits w the villain were just too off-putting. I was already having trouble getting into the romantic scenes due to awkward wording & then having the surgeon go into detail about his intentions toward a young child just ruined the rest of this, for me.

Can't get into this

I just can't get into this. This is just boring to me. It started off good..but the slow drawl of the narrator just didn't do it for me. He tried too hard to may it fit the period. Then it got boring and I just stopped.

Have you Heard....

Sir Alan a tightly controlled man hires Jem for a night of pleasure. Alan, a Baronet and former Army Captain has lost his joy in life. His last battle saw him severely injured and disillusioned by the atrocities of war. Alan returned home from the war still hurt and learns of his family's death to illness. Alan is attracted to men but keeps his desires tightly leashed but decides to spend a last night with a man and then end his life.

Jem is a prostitute and can't believe his good fortune when Sir Alan hires him. Jem's life has been tough and at only nineteen he has learned to fend for himself and provide for himself any way possible. For all the bad that has come into Jem's life he still has a lightness and hasn't let it break him. Jem also sees good in people and tries to protect those weaker than he.

I really enjoyed this book, Alan and Jem were good together and brightened each others lives all while allowing each other to be true to theirselves and appreciating each others unique personality's

I really enjoyed Jasper de Montfort's narration and the more I listened the more I felt he expressed each character perfectly with their own voice. I think the sexy time sections were especially good.😊

For a mostly angst free read/listen that has plenty of romance and action with minor violence this is a terrific story that I highly recommend.

I received a copy of this audiobook but this is my honest review.

one of the best stories yet

From beginning to end the story built up and when Jim rescued Annie from the dr. made me a little breathless but when Jim shoved her out the door to run away and got caught by the dr I cringed

Sexy Historical

A story with a lot of humor and hot 🔥 sexy times.

I always enjoyed reading/listening romantic historical romances but in recent years nothing in that genre caught my attention. My standards have been set high by authors such Diana Gabaldon, Amanda Quick and Lisa Kleypas to name some of my favorites ; that was true, until I found this book and "discovered" Summer Devon and Bonnie Dee. Their delightful tale left me laughing, hot and bother and utterly content.

As well, this is my first book narrated by Jasper Dr Montfort ; he did a good job.

No idea, I haven't read the print version.

The different voices for the characters

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There's quite a tense scene towards the end.

Any additional comments?

Hot and sweet Regency MM Romance

This book it both a traditional Regency Romance, with an MM twist, and new and fresh all at once. While it takes place in a ”real” Regency world where homosexuality is a crime, it doesn’t dwell on this too much, the MCs don’t seem to live in constant fear of discovery, while they are cautious. The romance is the main thing, and I really liked that.

Depressed war hero Sir Alan meets destitute but cheerful rentboy Jem and is surprised by the love and even joy Jem brings to his life. He hires Jem as his valet so they can be together and the feelings start to devellop.

I liked that both the two MCs and the secondary characters were all strong in their own way, and I liked the chemistry between Sir Alan and Jem, it was totally believable when they fell in love.

Jasper de Montfort is a new-to-me narrator and I liked his narration. However, I did sometimes have difficulty understanding what Jem said, due to his 19th century lower class accent, but that might be because I’m not a native English speaker.
