Publisher's Summary

The Game recounts the incredible adventures of the everyday man who transforms himself from a shy, awkward writer into the quick-witted, smooth-talking Style, a character irresistible to women. But just when life is better than he could have ever dreamed (he uses his techniques on Britney Spears, receives life coaching from Tom Cruise, moves into a mansion with Courtney Love, and is officially voted the World's Number One Pickup Artist), he falls head over heels for a woman who can beat him at his own game.

Jaw-dropping and hilarious, The Game reveals the naked truth about sex, love, and relationships - and getting exactly what you want.

Weird, sad, but interesting

Any additional comments?

I decided to listen to this book because I wanted to find out what the Pick Up Artist community is all about, why it exists and what they do. I find the whole PUA culture weird, disturbing and rather tragic, but I found this book very interesting and compelling.

It doesn't say good things about our society that the PUA community is so large and that guys feel this is the best, or only, way to meet women. I understand that part of the process if to make men feel more confident in themselves and therefore make them happier and more attractive. This seems like the positive part of the process, but they way they go about it and their attitudes towards women are just WEIRD. It seemed like they saw women as another species who have to be tricked and manipulated, or even a collectible card game where you try and get the special edition card that the other guys covet the most. It didn't seem like they were getting to know women or picking up girls they were personally interested in, but trying to score the 'prizes' they thought would most impress other men.

I don't think this is a book to listen to if you want to learn the PUA techniques, but it's very entertaining if you want to find out about the culture and what they were up to at the time this was written (apparently things have changed and the movement has split into competitive factions all trying to cash in on some mens inability to talk to women).Overall, although I enjoyed the craziness of the car-crash being played out in the book, it made me feel pretty sad about the state of male/female relationships, and I had to keep reminding myself that these guys are in the minority. The narration is good and the pace of the book is good too.

Captivating story

Strauss proves that in the short space of two years one can go trough a complete radical transformation if the motivation is strong enough. But the message is clear, be careful what you wish for!

Entertaining but don't expect to be educational

A great and interesting story. A entertaining book with some good pick up tips. It's not a "educational" book, but it was good reading.

A noughtys hit I missed and now caught up.

a load of nonsense made entertaining. a strange premise which just about worked. I wouldn't recommend but when this first came out I was in my later teens and was forever being mentioned in the lad mags as a kind of dark art guide to bedding whoever you want. glad I satisfied curiosity but all just a bit far fetched to be believed and had , for me, a now bygone attitude for women that I have since grown out of and left behind.

unfolds so brilliantly

Without doing any research and discovered neil through podcasts (tangentially speaking) (truth barrel), I had no idea how deep his journey as a Pick Up Artist was. I thought this was some sort of guide on how to pull so I was beautifully surprised to discover this is actually an amazing story it made me come to a self realisation and felt just like I watched an amazing movie.

A great book

I discovered the PUA community online when I was in my teens and to hear the whole story behind it all was really fascinating. Even if you know nothing about it, it's still a great book. Read by the author too, which is always good!

A fascinating rabbit hole

I really enjoyed it, very fascinating material. Would listen to again. Only problem I had was at certain parts Neil Strauss gets caught up in the words as if he's reliving it.

I wish I had read it years ago.

Took me down the pick up artist rabbit hole and I was intrigued, envious and aroused all at the same time.

This is great

I loved listening to this.

The idea of being a full time pick up artist doesn't appeal to me, but when I was younger I was the typical guy who always ended up friendzoned while his friends were out getting laid.

I observed my friends and taught myself how to be more of a challenge, how to keep my distance, and how to actually talk to women I was interested in -- and it worked. I found my own formula long before the days of the PUA.

So this book was entertaining, it was funny in places, and while I was never part of any community, this really did remind me of my younger years of learning to be more successful with women. My own count is about 200, and all as a result of teaching myself things that worked and learning how to stay detached -- had I received coaching I would have been dangerous!

If you're a guy who's struggling, then read this book and learn some good stuff -- be the you that you want to be, but be warned, there's more to life and it's better to find substance in your own core than it is to constantly seek the validation of women. If you cultivate an image, then you need to maintain it.

Oh, and the section on Britney Spears made her seem adorable.

Don’t judge this book by its cover!

I have read The Game and then I listened to this audio. This audio book does not keep pace with the written book. It skips out all the brilliant pieces from the text based book. I felt cheated as this audio book doesn’t full sync with the written version. You loose out on the valuable essence and essential material to make a better PUA. I recommend you read the book and apply the techniques contained within. This audio won’t help you. Best of luck.

Favourite book on psychology between the sexes

This book is a deep and brutally honest look into the psychology of attraction between the sexes. It's written in an entertaining way and I love how it's read by the author. The only downside is that this is an abridged version of the book.

A life changing book

Neil Strauss is quite possibly the most emotionally intelligent and self aware person I've ever heard speak. This is only added to by the fact that's it's read by him, so said as he intended it to be. I never write reviews, but felt this needed to be said.
Only on a superficial level is this book about picking up women, its primary purpose in my eyes is to self improve to the point where you are your best version. I certainly felt it did that for me. I do not use any of his techniques, but still create more possibilities for myself than I did before to find the right companion in life. I am more confident, have a better understanding of social dynamics and, most importantly, I'm more emotionally intelligent when I speak to women and when I speak to the rest of the world. It truly has changed my life.

Thank you Neil.

not what I thought

I avoided reading this book for years because I had formed the opinion that it was a guide to picking up women. To my surprise and delight it's much more than that, it of course discusses methods to engage with people of the opposite sex for the purpose of picking them up, but these methods are just as applicable in building rapport with anyone in any situation. More than that though I found that Neill shows a depth of thought and perception in the human condition that makes for a great listen and is for me thought provoking and rings true in my own experiences of human interaction.
All in all I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly.

Unsatisfactory quick moralising finish

Great narrative but left with too many, "what nexts?" at a rushed end. Needs a Game 2 or updated edition with a few more chapters and maybe a more complete look ar some of the famous techniques.

Entertaining, interesting & authentic.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Game to be better than the print version?

Don’t know haven’t read the print version.

What does Neil Strauss bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

It felt like a very authentic experience. The same guy who experienced the story, wore the story and (in the audiobook version) read the story. It felt more real, being voiced by the author. He’s a good story teller.
