Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

It is the early spring of 2016 and Queen Elizabeth is at Windsor Castle in advance of her 90th birthday celebrations. But the preparations are interrupted when a guest is found dead in one of the Castle bedrooms. The scene suggests the young Russian pianist strangled himself, but a badly tied knot leads MI5 to suspect foul play was involved. The Queen leaves the investigation to the professionals—until their suspicions point them in the wrong direction. Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

When she arrives at the idyllic getaway, she’s pleased to find that the owner is a handsome man by the name of Calvin Wells—and he’s eager to introduce her to his easygoing way of life. Planes, boats, and a Bentley
verbal-humor, amateur-sleuth, Italy, friendship, situational-humor, snarky, murder
The problem with the body in the chest freezer in the recreational area is that he was unknown, so Kim was called in to consult. The coroner wrote the murder off as obvious, but Kim had more questions and it was determined that the victim had a specialized lens implant, specialized implanted hearing aid, and specialized tooth implant. So Kim hares off to all sorts of places with an improved photo of the man searching for his identity. She has other fun along the way, of course, resulting in a really fun tale and an assortment of laughs. Of course I loved it!
While this tale does very little to recap earlier ones in the series, that is irrelevant as the story is just too much fun all by itself.
Claire Nicholls continues to narrate and interpret the characters exceptionally well.

Great listen!
I really, really liked this audiobook. It was interesting when I first began listening to it, and I never put it down until I finished it! Near the end of the audiobook, I was thrown for a loop as I was the end. I was completely surprised. I highly recommend this book if you like thrillers and suspense.

Excellent
I don't know if I'd describe this as a gripping psychological thriller but I would describe this as an excellent, gripping story. The pace, character development, and story-telling are top class, and as is not often the case with so many audiobooks in this genre, the twists and turns were actually very credible. a full 5 stars!
