Publisher's summary

Horror and suspense are not new topics in classic literature. While many are familiar with titles such as Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and the stories and poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, there is a plethora of older and lesser known tales of terror. These short stories (and some poems) contain all of the elements that are still popular with modern horror and suspense: vampires, ghosts, killers, and the supernatural. While some of the titles give away what each piece of literature is about topically, some aren't as clear. I feel that not knowing what you are about to hear will be more of a surprise. This is not unlike watching a film without knowing the synopsis.

Spooky Compilation

Any additional comments?

I enjoy horror of all varsities but I am partial to the classics. This compilation was perfect for me! From horror stories that I would never have found myself, to Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," this book has a plethora of diverse and spooky tales to get lost in. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys classic, short form horror!

Great spooky tales collection

What did you love best about The Frightful Fifty, Part One?

This is a collection 25 classic ghost/supernatural stories going back over 100 years or more. There were several tales included from great authors which I hadn't read before (Bram Stoker, Shirley Jackson, Sir Arthur Cona-Doyle) and was very interesting to listen.

Would you be willing to try another book from Steve Dustcircle? Why or why not?

Yes definitely. There is a second volume of 25 tales in this set and I will be looking forward to hearing this too.

Which character – as performed by Joseph R. Durika – was your favorite?

N/A. Was a collection of individual stories... though I would say that I especially enjoyed the story: Thr Old Nurses' Story. The narrator was very good, he did a great job with the material... having said that; many of the stories are set 100+ years ago in England or old Europe and the narrator was stretched do convincing accents and dialects.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, but I got the chills several times.

Any additional comments?

Great set of short horror gothic stories, really looking forward to the second volume.

Classic ghost story compilation

A very large collection of classic ghost stories. Some are really good while some are not so great, just skip the ones you don't and enjoy the ones
You do. A great presentation of some really obscure stories that you would otherwise not have found. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Just awesome

A brilliant collection of classic horror stories and poems. The majority of these I had never read, or even heard of. I just loved it. As a huge fan of classic horror this collection is a real treat.

The narrator wasn't my favorite but he did a good job and gave a good performance.

Interesting book

I enjoyed the stories, especially the language used. We don't speak this way anymore; people don't write with this language any more either.

Not my style

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. I did not make it through this book. I only got about an hour in. Five chapters I think. I was thinking I would give the older authors a try. For me, this was a mistake. I just couldn't get past the style of the writing. The way they talked back in those days just isn't for me. If you are a fan of old school authors then this would be great for you. The stories I listened to seemed to be good but the manner of speaking distracted me.
