it was a good read, not for overly sensitive types

The author hits hard on making profits and charging premium prices. I'd say to go a few steps further and charge the highest rates on the platform.

Some stuff is good advice on paper, but not exactly plausible in real life. For instance, Upwork allows you to bring in your own clients, but bringing clients in as a new freelancer will raise red flags. The book suggests doing that if you get discouraged looking for that first 5 star review. Often times they'll force you to jump through hoops to ensure you aren't commiting fraud or gaming the system. In my opinion, it's less hassle to send out 50-100 proposals to find your first client.

Also, the author suggests that you could theoretically lower your prices when starting out to attract clients. It's pretty clear from the rest of the book that the author just threw that snippet in the book to appease the emotional needs of money-sensitive readers.

Overall, it's a 10/10. This is the only relevant book on Upwork freelancing since they changed their proposal process to include paid connects. It even gives a few tips on automating your services and outsourcing project work through invoicing systems. The book rightfully assumes that if you follow the system laid out for you, then you'll have an overload of available work.

It's worth a lot more than a few bucks if you plan on actually doing what the book says to do.

The beginners' guide to Upwork

Essential instructions for Upwork beginners, although most content can be found on Upwork's official websites for free.

From my experience, my best clients were the ones that searched and invited me before I finding them, none of my cover letters that based on templates worked as expected. I also acted as a client and let my money work for me, then I find that most of the appliers used templated cover letters, I quickly got tired of reading them, only cared about links and attachments, and also the answers to the on-screen questions. So I'm not really sure if it is a good idea to use a template for cover letters.

I do expect this 2-hour long audiobook to contain some step-by-step guide to being an agent, but it's more of a beginner's guide for freelancers.

Recommended if you are new to Upwork.
