Publisher's summary

The Fourth of July takes place in the summer 1974 on an island off the coast of Connecticut.

All Jack Smith wants is a vacation like he enjoyed in his youth: swimming, sailing, and sunshine. But Jack finds his summer plans spiraling out of control. His estranged wife follows him to the island, looking for money. The priest and constable are conspiring his ruin. And the local Lolita is intent upon seducing him. Jack suddenly has more problems than he can handle, and he deals with them the only way he knows how: with rum and romance, all leading to a calamitous Fourth of July, in Kevin Dowd's hilarious first novel.

A Light Summer Read

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is one of those stories you'll enjoy reading on vacation when you want your brain to just relax and chuckle here and there. The characters are on vacation also and act as most of us would like to do when away from life's responsibilities. Heavy drinking seems to be the answer to all of their problems, or is it the main reason for those same problems? The storyline is a little murky at times. A single father who leaves his children to pretty much fend for themselves, while the mother has a restraining order that won't allow her to come close to them, is all of the explanation you will get for how things stand. Of course the mother comes anyway and her mind is more deranged than ever, but so what?.... Now, for the priest's story... That I still cannot quite get. He snaps apparently out of frustration for being overlooked yet again for a position, but going as far as he did, seems a little farfetched. Anyway, like I said, it is still a good read (or listening) for those lazy vacations day.
The cast of narrators does a great job in representing the singularity of each characters, and there are plenty of them.

ENTERTAINING STORY :)

I'm sure we've all had those days when just everything we do goes wrong, nothing works out, and you get frustrated! LOL this was a lighthearted, entertaining story about a guy who just can't catch a break during the Fourth of July holiday. I mean hell, if a priest and constable are out to get him, does he even stand a chance?
Enjoyed the story and the narration was awesome!

The Fourth of July

The Fourth of July
by Kevin Dowd

This is a different kind of short story. The adult characters act way too immature. There are some funny moments, but not enough to over-ride the overall story. Sorry I wasn't impressed! Sorry no excitement for the story.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Full Cast was the one thing I found entertaining!!
