Publisher's summary

Everyone knows how to lose weight: eat less, move more. But so many dieters who know what to do still don't do what they know. Why not? Because they don't understand the brain-body dynamics of weight loss. Now, cutting-edge research has revealed that millions of dieters following typical weight loss programs are actually programming themselves to get fatter.

In The Four-Day Win, Harvard-trained Oprah magazine columnist Martha Beck, Ph.D., reverses this trend and teaches dieters to get lean from the brain outward. The Four-Day Win tells how to reverse the brain-body programming that makes you fat, so you can create a new, leaner, and healthier body...for good. As empathetic and funny as she is informative, Martha Beck observes that:

  • Traditional dieting relies on the ability to go numb or to override physical and emotional feelings.
  • Overeating is a self-calming compulsion similar to OCD: dieters turn to food (and lots of it) when they're deprived of comfort.
  • Overweight people can reverse the brain-body programming that is making them fat. Instead of attacking their bodies, they can learn to support them.

Dr. Beck helps you to think thin and end your compulsion to overeat, and includes a Jump-Start weight-loss program that will help you shed pounds the best way, both psychologically and physically. An inspiring and enlightening challenge to everything you think you know about losing weight, The Four-Day Win provides you with an easy and fail-proof way to change your life.

Fun, Fresh, and Insightful

I loved this book. Martha Beck addresses some of the most vexing problems of being on a diet--the psychological ones-- and provides a way to really deal with them, not just wish them away. The Four Day Win structure that she proposes is completely doable. By completing sequential "ridiculously easy" tasks, each for four days, building better "move more, eat less" habits becomes almost fun. Martha Beck is a pleasure to listen to-- funny, clear, and memorable. I suspect that, with some imagination, Four Day Win has applications for other binge-starvation activities (for me, time management and budgeting). I highly recommend this book. I know that I will be referring to it for a long time to come.

More about destressing

I found this audible to be ok. I think it was more about destressing and trying to relax rather than getting frustrated and raiding the fridge. I was a bit disappointed, though, that you have to go through a number of 4 day activities before anything starts to happen.

Just brilliant!

Where has this book been all my life? Listened to the whole thing and now going back to the beginning to listen again. Martha Beck is an amazing human being and a gift to humanity - especially to those who would like to heal from shame, guilt and pain and live a wonderful life. May you all be well, may you be happy, may you be free from suffering.

Great advice and program. highly recommend

this book reminds me of the no BS weight loss program was very similar ideas so they go very well together. but I love the four-day concept. it's excellent and the watcher perfect tool to help you to stop criticizing and love yourself which is a big part of why we overeat and get fat. anyone trying to lose weight. you should read this, especially those who are really obese.

Forceful "dieting" will not change your brain

Martha Beck is an inspiring Life Coach and a much needed resource in the world of weight loss struggles. Stop setting yourself up for failure - adopting unnatural and unrealistic regimens in order to lose the pounds does not accomplish your real goal. You need to change from the inside out, or there is little chance the change will last your lifetime. Patiently approaching the exercises in this book is laying the ground work for lifelong health. Kudos to an author and motivator who gets it!

Outstanding

Best and in a class by itself. It’s the umbrella philosophy that encompasses all you need to correct weight and doesn’t exclude other disciplines. It is the Grand Unifying Philosophy, IMO.

Really Enjoyed this Audiobook

What made the experience of listening to The Four-Day Win the most enjoyable?

The way she reads the book! I listen to many audiobooks but listening to her narration has been the best listening experience. She should narrate professionally! She was able to keep my attention whereas with many other audiobooks, I find myself switching off and having to rewind to catch up what I missed. Lovely easy going style - and she has a great sense of humour which I appreciated.

What did you like best about this story?

I believe the same as the author - all diets work, so you just need to find the method that works best for you in the long run (one that you can maintain and live with for the rest of your life!) - BUT we need to change the way we think about eating and dieting. We are diet and exercise obsessed.

What does Martha Beck bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her dry sense of humour.

Any additional comments?

I like the idea of the four day win plans, but near the end of the book, it felt like we'd be doing a four day win and journaling for the rest of our lives. A lot of work needed to follow everything she says. I like that she asks you to find a goal - and then half it - That definitely makes the goal easier to complete. I believe the reward at the end of each day is essential to succeed. I like that she encourages you to quick start, then work on the rest of the methods - That makes is more do-able too.

Rings True

For those of us who have lost and gained weight -- it really is a mystery as to why sometimes we have the "willpower" to eat less/move more and sometimes we have no "willpower". I think Beck, in a really funny way, helps explain in fairly simple terms some of the inner voices and motivations that create our behaviors. She uses lots of easy to understand metaphors -- and helps demystify "willpower". Although you won't lose 30 pounds in 30 days with this approach, I'm giving it a try because it rings true.

I like her presentation -- it's witty and engaging

Very "new age"

I am definately christian,,, and this book is very "new age". It has some good things in it but the "new age" undertones and the swearing make it hard for me to keep going back to it.
