Story
In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.

The foundations of capitalism are being battered by a flood of altruism, which is the cause of the modern world's collapse. This was the view of Ayn Rand, a view so radically opposed to prevailing attitudes that it constituted a major philosophic revolution. In this series of essays, she presented her stand on the persecution of big business, the causes of war, the default of conservatism, and the evils of altruism.

Who needs philosophy? Ayn Rand's answer: Everyone. This collection of essays was the last work planned by Ayn Rand before her death in 1982. In it, she summarizes her view of philosophy and deals with a broad spectrum of topics. According to Ayn Rand, the choice we make is not whether to have a philosophy, but which one to have: a rational, conscious, and therefore practical one, or a contradictory, unidentified, and ultimately lethal one.

This is Ayn Rand's challenge to the prevalent philosophical doctrines of our time and the "atmosphere of guilt, of panic, of despair, of boredom, and of all-pervasive evasion" that they create. One of the most controversial figures on the intellectual scene, Ayn Rand was the proponent of a moral philosophy, an ethic of rational self-interest, that stands in sharp opposition to the ethics of altruism and self-sacrifice.

In the years between her first public lecture in 1961 and her last in 1981, Ayn Rand spoke and wrote about topics as different as education, medicine, Vietnam, and the death of Marilyn Monroe. In The Voice of Reason, these pieces are gathered together in book form for the first time. Written in the last decades of Rand's life, they reflect a life lived on principle, a probing mind, and a passionate intensity. With them are five essays by Leonard Peikoff, Rand's longtime associate and literary executor.

Story
In this beautifully written and brilliantly reasoned collection of essays, Ayn Rand throws new light on the nature of art and its purpose in human life. Once again, she demonstrates her bold originality and her refusal to let conventional ideas define her sense of the truth. Rand eloquently asserts that one cannot create art without infusing it with one's own value judgments and personal philosophy - even an attempt to withhold moral overtones only results in a deterministic or naturalistic message.

After the publication of Atlas Shrugged in 1957, Ayn Rand occasionally lectured in order to bring her philosophy of Objectivism to a wider audience and apply it to current cultural and political issues. These taped lectures and the question-and-answer sessions that followed added not only an eloquent new dimension to Ayn Rand's ideas and beliefs, but a fresh and spontaneous insight into Ayn Rand herself.

Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

One of the great books, but long.
What made the experience of listening to The Fountainhead the most enjoyable?
This book was narrated very well, with excellent clarity.
What about Edward Herrmann’s performance did you like?
The tone and pitch of his voice was perfect for the story. He really captured the essence of all the characters so well that I could not only picture what they looked like, but felt their attitude as well.
If you could take any character from The Fountainhead out to dinner, who would it be and why?
None of them, they are all completely dysfunctional.
Any additional comments?
I've been trying to read (finish) this book for years. Thanks to Audible, I've finally done it.

Above my head I think
I love (my part) in a philosophical discussion. Maybe that's why I wasn't so into this book, but who am I to give bad ratings to such a classic?
I just didn't get this novel. Perhaps I just don't really like novels. I thought the characters were boring, melodramatic downers and I dunno. I'd like to have a discussion with someone who is educated and who wouldn't get mad at me for asking stupid questions about it

My bad!!
OMG!!! I was asleep at the switch!! I bought an ABRIDGED edition of The Fountainhead. I swore I would never buy another abridged title and I was suckered in by the sale. I wasn't paying attention. No wonder I hated it. And what a waste of a sale credit!!!!!!
Two stars overall because it is abridged--and abridgements are an abomination. They chopped away 3/4 of the book.
Three stars for the story--one extra for what it could have been
Five stars for Edward Hermann because he is always five star.

I guess this is always the fear when you buy an old abridged novel, that the unabridged version is just around the corner - sure enough this is the .
As with Atlas Shrugged the reader does get bashed by the message but what did you expect.
While I don't agree with Rand, or Objectivism totally, she sure makes you think.

Pretentious but provocative
This book is certainly a worthy listen, especially with the narrator's performance. He really brings the characters to life, from the despicable ellesworth toole (spelling?) to the fascinating dominique franken. I always knew who was speaking, and felt like a fly on the wall to some historic events.
While the story itself was sometimes a bit much, with the characters feeling more like a parody and the story a bit preachy, it was still thought provoking, and has led me to much further reading. Also, remember that it was written in the 40s, where people did talk more like they do in this book.
If you are looking for something a bit more than fiction but less than a documentary, something to challenge your own thought processes and life motivations, I highly recommend this book!

Adolescent nonsense
I came to this tale expecting substance and challenging ideas, in view of how influential it has been for the evolution of politics in the second half of the 20C. Instead it turns out to be shallow, unengaging and predictable. The characters in a Marvel comic have more depth in them. Barbara Cartland's romantic novels appear like great literary milestones in comparison. I got to the end of chapter 2 but could face no more.
The ethical values which it embodies are centred around teenage solipsism, self-regard and the individual as a law unto himself. Definitely himself and not herself by the way.
Greatly admired by Alan Greenspan, the favourite book of Mike Pompeo and Mr Trump. On reflection, maybe high expectations were misplaced.
No complaints about the narrator. Poor chap having to drag himself through this dull mud.

Short Version
This is a shortened version from the orginal 700+ pages-long book, so it isn't useful when trying to read the book while reading it ate the same time. Listening to the audiobook while reading the actual book helps me read faster as I go along with the audiobook's speed, and if playing on an iPod (and maybe on iTunes, I haven't tried), you can set the velocity of the audiobook faster or slower, which helps improve either your understandng of the story or your reading pace.
This audiobook file, although it isn't bad, it is not what I was expecting. At any moment before using my initial credit, did I know this was not what I was looking for as it was never specified to be a summarised version, and so I had to spend an extra credit on buying the complete file, which I thought at first was just another version, but now I know the difference was the other file, was the complete version and this just a shortened one which was no use.

Perfectly suited narrator to a great classic story.
A sublime story, with characters of depth and greatly nuanced. Sadly we have far too many Tooheys running and teaching in today’s world and far too few Roarks. A book with relationships written with such depth that, unsurprisingly, feminists over the last decades have been unable to either grasp the complexities or understand the depth of the relationships between any of the major characters and instead have maligned and slandered the story and the writer, a strong intelligent and empowered woman. I imagine she neither wanted nor needed their brand of acceptance.

The subtle art of not giving a Fxck- one!
Good book in general. Excellent writing and easy reading but... The author took a single concept of not giving a fxck, milking it dry. 3 characters so different but so the same...above the weak proletariat. Huxley would have cherished the masses control with the main aim of happiness or power and control. If you like reading you might be able to pallet this novel with a strong slant towards promiscuity. Long love the strong in the name of freedom...I personally value the idea of individuality.
