Publisher's summary

Captain Blood, the remarkable physician turned pirate, returns for more thrilling adventures at sea. Time and again, he falls headlong into deep peril, each time emerging victorious. Yet when everything is stacked against him, can he keep his honour until the bitter end?

Rafael Sabatini (29 April 1875 - 13 February 1950) was an Italian/English author of romance and adventure novels. He was a prolific writer and produced a new book almost every year, maintaining a great deal of popularity throughout his career, but the titles that secured his reputation were Scaramouche and the Captain Blood novels. He died on February 13, 1950 in Switzerland.

Critic reviews

“One wonders if there is another storyteller so adroit at filling his pages with intrigue and counter-intrigue, with danger threaded with romance, with a background of lavish colour, of silks and velvets, of swords and jewels” ( Daily Telegraph)
“Sabatini's stories abound with drama and melodrama, action and excitement and brilliant colour, as well as minute period detail. No writer, not Scott, nor Dumas, nor Stevenson, has brought the past to life more vividly or accurately.” (George Macdonald Fraser)

Great Entertaining Read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. I loved the first Captain Blood book and this is more great stories.

Any additional comments?

I was worried that I wouldn't be as interested in this as the original book, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Love the story

What made the experience of listening to The Fortunes of Captain Blood the most enjoyable?

I love the Captain Blood series by Rafael Sabatini, Wish someone would come out with a new movie or series (along the line of Horatio Hornblower from the BBC). I have read these books as hard copies and paperbacks but I wanted the audiobooks as well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fortunes of Captain Blood?

It is a series of adventures that could have been included in the original Captain Blood book, but you know these took place during his reign as a pirate after escaping slavery. The last story in this book is one where he saves a woman from a bad husband. One thing that makes that story memorable is the chivalry. Captain Blood may be a pirate out of necessity but he is a real gentleman. Each story is good though.

What aspect of Michael Maloney’s performance would you have changed?

I think he narrated a little bit too fast. I found it hard to understand what he was saying because it never got much chance to sink in.

Who was the most memorable character of The Fortunes of Captain Blood and why?

Peter Blood, of course.

Any additional comments?

The original Captain Blood Odyssey is much better to listen to than this one, but there were no other narrators to choose from. This is the only audiobook for The Fortunes of Captain Blood that I can find anywhere. I just want all these books in all formats.

Sprain blood does it again

Rafael Sabatini is nothing short of a genius. His masterful accounts of captain blood make you wonder if he himself could have gripped the helm of ships and been such a rogue and a pirate.

An adventure not to missed

Rafael Sabatini’s mastery of the history of the seventeenth century including pirates, sword play, and ship handling. The four sided battle between England, France, Spain And the Dutch was a World War. Part of that was fought in the Caribbean Sea.
Pirates or Buccaneers as they were called were common in the area.
War in smaller areas of operation usually consist of battles and daring deeds that rarely are reported or when told increase with each telling.
These stories by Sabatini thrilled my boyhood and made me want to be a fighting gentlemen like Captain Blood. I took up Fencing, Epee and Saber with all the equipment and enthusiasm of a young boy/ teenager.
These stories should never be out of print and deserve a place in every gentleman warrior’s library.
Another recommendation are all of Edgar Rice Burroughs books.
For those not aware ERB wrote the Tarzan series 30+. The John Carter of Mars series 11 books and another 50+ books of ingenuity, chivalry and manly behavior, always fighting honestly always defending the honor of Women and his friends.
You will have something to pass on to the future generations so they can see that such brave and courteous men once roamed the jungles, the inner earth and Mars.

Another spectacular performance by Michael Maloney

Michael Maloneye is one of the finest narrators. He is the perfect reader for Sabbatini. All the accents are beautifully done. The listener is swept away in the characters. Every bit as good as the other Captain Blood books.

A series of gripping adventures.

Another selection of Captain Blood's adventures in the Caribbean exquisitely performed by Michael Maloney, whose name I am beginning to take as a stamp of quality upon any audiobook to which it is attached. The Fortunes of Captain Blood is as enjoyable and satisfying as Rafael Sabatini's other books in the series.

Another superb collection of tales.

Sabatini delivers again with these last tales of Blood's career. Varied, cleverly thought out, painstakingly researched, and masterfully told - they conjure up the classic image of the Golden Age of Piracy without ever being being hackneyed or predictable.
