Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling authors Karen White, Beatriz Williams, and Lauren Willig present a masterful collaboration - a rich, multigenerational novel of love and loss that spans half a century....

It's 1945: When the critically wounded Captain Cooper Ravenal is brought to a private hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side, young Dr. Kate Schuyler is drawn into a complex mystery that connects three generations of women in her family to a single extraordinary room in a Gilded Age mansion. Who is the woman in Captain Ravenel's portrait miniature who looks so much like Kate? And why is she wearing the ruby pendant handed down to Kate by her mother? In their pursuit of answers, they find themselves drawn into the turbulent stories of Gilded Age Olive Van Alen, driven from riches to rags, who hired out as a servant in the very house her father designed, and Jazz Age Lucy Young, who came from Brooklyn to Manhattan in pursuit of the father she had never known. But are Kate and Cooper ready for the secrets that will be revealed in the Forgotten Room?

The Forgotten Room, set in alternating time periods, is a sumptuous feast of a novel brought to vivid life by three brilliant storytellers.

Surprising

This was a very entertaining audio book. Some twists and turns were unexpected. A wonderful not sappy story of love.

Up my alley....

I thought this book was wonderful. Loved the history. I like to follow the lives of others way back when and listen to the twists, turns, and secrets. Was different listening to the time periods go back and forth, but I got used to it. Nice narration too. Great job writing this one ladies!

A great love story

I enjoyed this so much! The story spanned 3 generations and the skillful way the narrative switched back and forth among them kept me riveted, wanting to know how it would turn out for each of them.

Wonderful!

This was a truly engaging book. I was nervous about a book by three authors, but it was genius! Some romance, some mystery, some history, and kept me guessing until the end. If you like any of these authors, you should definitely try this book!!

Confused by the different characters and time peri

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Listening is different from reading. The listener needs to grasp the character and year quickly and hold on to the details and the book shifts around to other years and people. This book was hard for me in that regard.

3-Generation Romantic Mystery, Intricately Woven

Except for a single unresolved red-herring, I thought this book was perfect.
Three women. Three generations, beginning in 1893 and ending in 1944 (or thereabouts).
Three chances at heart and mind boggling love.
Seriously, this is the stuff from which great Masterpiece Theatres are made.

Each chapter is told from the perspective of Olive, her daughter Lucy, or her granddaughter Kate. The telling and skips around the decades for a slow and gorgeous reveal.

The room referenced in the title is on the secret 7th floor of the Pratt Mansion in old New York. No stairway leads directly to it. You have to know it's there to know it's there. It's the room that young Harry Pratt uses as his painter's studio (designed specifically for that purpose by Olive Van Allen's architect father, two floors above the servants' attics.

In some interesting choices, Olive and Lucy's stories are told in the third person and by the same narrator - the wonderful Susan Bennett. Kate's story is relayed in the first person and narrated by the equally wonderful and somehow more modern sounding Morgan Hallett.

I honestly don't want to say much more because...spoilers. I will say I was captivated. Kept on my toes and on the edge of my seat, simultaneously.

A great book and perfect performances.

AWFUL narration, really does NOT assist the story. But it’s such a tragically romantic story.

I really liked the story itself! Sure...there were some infuriating parts, but my god! The romance...and the tragedy of having been together but never again...and the heartbreak of Harry and Olive! Ugh! The feels!
The narration - and I know this sounds super mean - was trash. It detracted from the story 100%, but the story is good despite it and could have been amazing with different narrators.
