A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Story
After dying and being reborn into a world that's built like a video game, Jim has found himself stuck in a very old-world style new-player zone for low-level adventurers. Unfortunately, the zone fell out of use centuries ago, and no one told the monsters they were supposed to take it easy on the Noobs. Even worse, the only new player around is Jim. Jim has been given an opportunity, and he'll do his best to take advantage of it.

Publisher's Summary
Things are looking up for Jax, more or less. He's met a cool girl (who's a wisp), got some new friends (who're Dwarves and Cat people and Elves and all sorts), and started a war.... (Whoops!)
That last one might not be the best idea he's had yet, admittedly, but the guy was an ass, and he deserved it....
Only thing is, they say an Englishman's home is his castle, and Jax's home is in ruins...this place isn't going to be any use in defending his new people unless he gets it sorted, and fast!
He needs material, equipment, magic and people, most of all he needs time, time to get things ready, to get his ships in the air and his house in order....
When you're surrounded on all sides, outclassed, outnumbered and everyone's probably a bit brighter than you are, there's only one option.... Attack!

Full of Potholes
Overall I'd say the book is a mediocre read with the negatives overshadowing the positives, like a long well maintained road with a small stretch of tire destroying potholes that render the entire road useless. As to why that is, well, the MC is supposed to be some sort of bad ass, ex military, trained to the gills, warrior with a bloodline mixed with dozens of powerful nonhuman lineages but he acts like an awkward and angry teenager 90% of the time. He's more of a juvenile delinquent than anything else despite being (I think) in his thirties. Besides that, the MC has been getting sexually harassed by a dungeon pixie he's mentally linked to for two books now. She keeps cornering him when he's alone and insisting that they have sex despite him repeatedly telling her no and asking her for more time to consider it. Maybe the author considers this some sort of long drawn out foreplay or maybe he meant it as a joke, but this is a recurring trope in the books that at some point grew creepy and more than a little rapey. The fact that she has a direct link to his brain and utilizes it to choose forms that would make it easier for her to manipulate him doesn't help.

Very Disappointing...Returned
I came for brute swings Naginata and kills things. Very simple, very easy requirement to satisfy. I put up with the narrator last book because the story was interesting and kept me engaged. Could not get through 5hrs of this overly emotional snooze fest and the narrator was the final nail. I tried to put it down and come back multiple times. Solid nope from me. Very disappointed. I don't care what happens in this story anymore. Should have stopped with Book 1. First book rated over 4.6 that I have absolutely no desire to finish.

Disappointment Pt 2
Disappointment Pt 1
My introduction to Jez Cajiao was on Book 1 of his "Rise of Mankind" series, Age of Stone which I thoroughly enjoyed. On the strength of that book I decided to purchase both book 1&2 of Underverse series. I wish I could write that I enjoyed them as well as Age of Stone but, quite the contrary, I found myself fast forwarding though large sections of the books. The MC was not a very likable bloke. he had temper management issues, a boorish personality, and used m/f-bombs as though they were arcane incantations. The author also sprinkled soft porn tease interactions that added nothing to the story but to diminish the MC even further. There was a lot of repetitive moral postulating and an over abundance of lengthy stat-spews which stalled the pace of the story.
There were other issues with these books but the above is enough to make my decision to not continue with the series.
Wayne Mitchell performance was well-done if the author wanted his MC to come off as a half-witted dullard.

Bit of a slog - Pity as it over shadows a decent story.
The story is not bad, i would go as far as saying good. What let’s it down is the MC is just a hodge podge of conflicting character types. The constant virtue signalling and reinforcement of political correctness makes the character seem more targeted at a younger audience. The sexual content was just 90s slapstick locker room stuff. Low top this, short that. The book was positioned as dark and I can see why but it has an identity crisis at times.
I also really struggled with the narration, I appreciate the effort put in but some of the accents are just grating and really not required.
It sounds overly negative but it’s not all that bad. There is an audience this will resonate with. I personally like my dark themes more gritty and humour more clever.
Most important an MC that is just more realistic and character driven, less story driven.
I was 60/40 after book 1 but I think I won’t see this series through.

Insanely good :)
The narrator has really sunk into his voices amd done a great job, the stat read outs are interesting, short and unobtrusive, the action is exceptional. However, most critically, the story is pretty much perfect. Nailed it!

Excellent 2nd audio
After the first breaking in off the first audio Wayne's performance fits in nicely and I enjoyed the Jax tale immensely. It was also helped along by the camaraderie and leaving the tower as we bond deeper with the group overall as well. Without any spoilers i cant wait to listen to the next two audiosnto get up to speed with the books.
