Editorial reviews

Editors Select, June 2015 - Obligatory lecture: If you love audio, and you have not yet checked out 14, you should. That said, The Fold – which is set within the same universe, but stands on its own – may just as easily make a Peter Clines groupie out of you. This sci-fi mystery follows Mike, a not-so-ordinary high school teacher hired to investigate the scientists behind The Albuquerque Door, a machine that has made teleportation possible. It seems to work fine... but as he digs deeper, Mike soon realizes the scientists are hiding something. It's a signature Clines story, full of puzzles, fun characters, and plenty of weirdness. The cherry on top is 14 narrator Ray Porter, who so perfectly embodies the authors' characters and tone, mastering his unique blend of sarcasm and suspense. —Sam, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Step into the fold. It's perfectly safe.

The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

Far out in the California desert, a team of DARPA scientists has invented a device they affectionately call the Albuquerque Door. Using a cryptic computer equation and magnetic fields to "fold" dimensions, it shrinks distances so a traveler can travel hundreds of feet with a single step. The invention promises to make mankind's dreams of teleportation a reality. And, the scientists insist, traveling through the door is completely safe. Yet evidence is mounting that this miraculous machine isn't quite what it seems - and that its creators are harboring a dangerous secret.

As his investigations draw him deeper into the puzzle, Mike begins to fear there's only one answer that makes sense. And if he's right, it may be only a matter of time before the project destroys...everything. A cunningly inventive mystery featuring a hero worthy of Sherlock Holmes and a terrifying final twist you'll never see coming, The Fold is that rarest of things: a genuine pause-resister science-fiction thriller. Step inside its audio and learn why author Peter Clines has already won legions of loyal fans.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Ray Porter deftly captures the emotions of a group of people who are caught up in a force they don't understand.... Porter ably voices a wide range of characters--from the gruff team leader to the foul-mouthed female engineer and the stammering alien leader. Porter is an affable travel guide on this thrilling trip to a frightening world." ( AudioFile)

Untitled positive review #1

A briskly-paced sci-fi/mystery/thriller with engaging characters and a surprising amount of humor, "The Fold" is strongly reminiscent of 1980's-era Dean Koontz, with a little Michael Crichton on the side. Clines' fondness for tossing bits of current pop-culture into character dialog may eventually make his work seem a bit dated, but does give it a sense of immediacy for today's reader. Clines is very good at portraying "regular guy in odd situation" protagonists, and his characters seem like people you'd know -- if you hung out with more interesting people. Ray Porter has a good "regular guy" voice, does several other male character types well, and manages female voices as well as can be expected without expensive surgery. I had no trouble telling who was talking in group scenes, and he varies his pace and tone to reflect the emotion or drama of a scene quite effectively. This is my third Clines book, and I'll be looking out for future work from this team.

Another great sci fi novel by Clines

I read 14 by Peter Clines a few years ago and I really enjoyed it. This one was just as well written and another fantastic performance by Ray Porter. He is one of my all time favorite narrator in the business. This is a must read for all sci fi fans.

Great Sci-Fi Story ~ Sasha Was a Horrible Character

I would have enjoyed this soooo much more if Sasha was not in it or if Peter Clines would not have made her a character who used the 'F' word so much. It became comical towards the end. I'm no prude either but this was just ridiculous and made the book less enjoyable for me.

Still a Clines fan but kind of disappointed that he chose to include this type of character in an otherwise intriguing plot and storyline.

Loved it!

I'll warn readers now that there are some scientific holes you could drive a truck through, but don't let that worry you. This is good fun - great characters (Clines does that so well), believable set up, good action, and great narration.

I loved 14, and I was looking for something from Clines that wasn't in the zombie apocalypse vein - and I was thrilled when I saw this come out. And I wasn't disappointed.

The only complaint I have with the story is a very minor one - it sets itself up for sequels, and often sequels are used as easy moneymakers rather than good novels. I hope that's not the case should there in fact be sequels from The Fold.

Crazy scientist

This is a separate story about the technology in "14".Totally separate so you can read either /or. Very exciting if you read both. I really like the way Clines tells stories. They unfold ( no pun intended). The characters are learning with you, which avoids a lot of the exposition you get with sci-fi that is ultimately unsatisfying. This story every description, outcome is gratifying. I am kind of hoping for a series, either with these or the "14" or combination of two. Ray Porter is an audible favorite for a reason. Always enjoy having him read me a story.

Great start. Painful to finish

Would you recommend The Fold to your friends? Why or why not?

I really enjoyed this book up to sayyyyy chapter 39 and then it just died for me. Totally lost me. I love the premis of the main character but the storyline was just too weak. Moved way to slow from that point. I would skip this one if I had another chance

Started strong-- went downhill

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Ray Porter?
Ray Porter was a great narrator-- so yes for him.

Would you ever listen to anything by Peter Clines again?
Probably not

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?
He did a good job with all of them

Any additional comments?
Pros: Imaginative story with fantastic possibilities, very good narration, the main character was strongly written.

Cons: The female characters were so, so lame-- does the author even know any real women????, the nonstop f-word was a huge distraction in audio format, the ending was disappointing. The author had the opportunity to end with something really amazing (like some sweet physics, and blew it with (spoiler).

Gripping. Creepy. Well done.

LOVED it.
Clines has a real handle on the creepy things that exist just past the corner of your eye.

Awesome!

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator did a fantastic job and the story itself was well written and captivating. I wish this was the first book of a series!
