Publisher's summary

Taya has risen from humble roots to become a fire seer in the Coalition of Mages. Eager to prove herself, she arrives in the town of Hrappa to locate a "jackal" - a mage operating outside the Coalition's authority - who has murdered three people.

But in Hrappa, she discovers that the man assigned to be her bodyguard is Mandir, her nemesis from years ago. When she and Mandir were students, he bullied her so severely he was sentenced to a year of penance and moved to another temple.

When Mandir sees that he's been partnered with Taya, all his old torment comes rushing back. He's had a crush on Taya since the day they began their training, but he pushed her away, ashamed of his attraction to someone so far beneath his social class. He regrets that now and intends to make an honest attempt to win her heart - if she can forgive him for his past sins.

But first they must find the murderous jackal, before the jackal finds them.

A great new series from an excellent author.

I received this audio book free from the author for an honest review.

This book was amazing. I haven't listen to a lot of audiobooks before but this one is excellent. Some of the others have a narrator that doesn't have any emotion. This guy made me believe he was reading the characters and enjoying it. It was refreshing to hear. I will recommend this to people I know who like mysteries with a touch of the supernatural.

Enjoyable Fantasy/kind of historical love story-

If you could sum up The Fire Seer in three words, what would they be?

magical mystery romance

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fire Seer?

When Taya accidentally burned Mandir

What about Scott Richard Ehredt’s performance did you like?

After getting used to his voice, I liked that it was very easy to tell who was speaking and that the appropriate emotions carried in his voice

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No

Any additional comments?

This book reads more like a historical, even though it isn't. It's a murder mystery and a romance where the characters can use magic, but magic is not really the focus of the book. The characters have believable interactions. I liked that Taya didn't just fall into Mandirs arms and that Mandir really had to work to redeem himself. I liked that I could listen to it in front of my kids, except for the ONE explicit scene at the end, which I had to skip through. The book has good pacing and a hopeful end. I was left feeling an appreciation for ancient civilizations. I don't normally like mysteries but I've liked everything that this author has written so far. I think any adult could enjoy this book.

Pretty Good Story

I enjoyed the story and the slow romance though that was not the main topic. I did have trouble understanding how these two seemed a little slow on the up take of the investigation. I understand it was their first case but how naive can one be when the studied for 10 years.
They are legal magic users trained by the coalition to up hold the magic laws. For which they are trained from teenagers. To me they still seemed too young to be on assignment together. One would think the coalition would assign a rookie and expert together on first assignments. Both of characters stumble their way threw the investigation and cut many cuts and bruises as a result.

Loved this one!

What did you love best about The Fire Seer?

Another well done tale by author Amy Raby. This author excels at character driven stories with a unique setting and magic system. A strong female protagonist, magic, and a romantic subplot make this one a keeper for sure. And it had a dwarf pack elephant - who wouldn't love that :) I also really enjoyed the narrator who has a wonderful voice that I could listen to forever. I would definitely seek out other books by both this narrator and author.
