Publisher's Summary

Heir to the most notorious clan in the Highlands, Hugh MacIain hides his identity while imprisoned in the bowels of Fort William's hell. Aye, this braw warrior has endured horrors that should have seen him dead, though now it appears it's the bloody flux that will send him to Satan's fire.

Optimistic, competent, and captivating, Charlotte Hill takes pity on the fevered prisoner sprawled atop a cot in the fort's surgery. When finally the Highlander opens his eyes, he seizes her heart with a pained stare. Truly, this is no commoner - but in 1692, a warrior loyal to the Jacobite cause and the daughter of a government colonel may as well be worlds apart.

After his escape, Hugh snatches his chance to woo the lass, until disaster strikes. While war and lust for vengeance force Charlotte further from Hugh's arms, the couple's romance seems aimlessly adrift on the open sea. Before they sail too far apart, can the tender love of an English lady coax a determined Highlander from his path of revenge?

Outstanding.

Have you listened to any of Joel Froomkin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first performance I've listened to of Joel's. He has a very nice Scottish brogue.

Any additional comments?

There are stories and then there are those rare few that touch your mind, heart and soul. This is such a story. This amazing book by Amy Jarecki left me in deep thought. It stirred me to the depths of my sole. I did not know the story of Glencoe, prior to listening to this book. This author weaves fact and fiction together beautifully. It is a history lesson come to life, with historical romance blended in for the avid romance reader. Do not pass this story by. The facts of Glencoe were well written and tugged on my heart. The fictional romance made me want jump back in time and find this man. It is that good. A must read.

A bit tedious

Although the historic portion of this book was interesting, the romance portion was tedious. it started out good enough, but too many turn of events get tiring. I realize history has many horrid realities, I don't really like to read about it for entertainment. I read romance for entertainment. If you feel the same way, this book may not be for you.
I did not feel the narrator gave Hugh a strong voice which some times made him sound floundering and indecisive. And sometimes even like an elderly man.

The Fearless Highlander

What made the experience of listening to The Fearless Highlander the most enjoyable?

I loved listening to how beautifully Joel Froomkin narrated this captivating story. It adds so much to a story when you can hear the characters speaking as they truly would have at the time, the correct pronunciation of words and how they were spoken.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot of The Fearless Highlander was closely based on truth. Ms. Jarecki did an exceptional job researching the background for this book as well as creating such memorable characters.

What does Joel Froomkin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

This was the first time I've listened to Joel Froomkin narrate a book for audible. I must say he did an outstanding job of bringing each and every character to life in a way that the listener can easily distinguish between characters. He is an excellent and mesmerizing storyteller.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I definitely didn't want to put my kindle down and stop listening. It was a great experience and I totally enjoyed every minute of it!

Any additional comments?

This is an audio book I would have no problem recommending to friends or anyone who enjoys books/romances of this period. Excellent read and listen!

A good read!

I enjoyed this book very much! However, at times I didn't love it when a man voiced the thoughts and points of view of a woman, it seemed a tad off to me (just my opinion.) I also wish that the two romantic leads had more time to "fall in love" with each other form a personal perspective. It seems like they met each other, thought the other one was attractive, and then BOOM, they were "in love." But anyway, I do recommend this book to be a nice pallet cleanser if you've been consuming too many historical romances from the regency era in London back to back. It sure does give you a nice kick of Highland muscle!

Historical Fiction with a Romance

If you could sum up The Fearless Highlander in three words, what would they be?

Sexy, factual, and violent.

What other book might you compare The Fearless Highlander to and why?

Outlander in that it takes historical facts and events and creates a fictional love story around them. It also does a good job of taking you back in history by describing life at the time the story takes place with various chronologically-inclined details, which many other historical romances just barely touch upon. When done well, I enjoy getting a cultural experience of the time period while being entertained with interesting characters and a good story; both Outlander and this book do just that.

What does Joel Froomkin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A voice that fits the characters well. His brogue was so strong at first I had to get acclimated to it, but once I did, it suited the novel nicely. I was pleased with his performance and his ability to differentiate between the various characters.

Any additional comments?

This book gets pretty dark at times, and it doesn't shy away from violence, actual or implied. If you're looking for a feel-good, light-hearted historical romance, this isn't for you. This has steamy romance poured over actual barbaric events that took place in Scotland in the late 17th century. I liked this book even more because of this as it makes this story something different, and more accurate, when compared to many other highland romances. Due to my enjoyment of Book One, I look forward to continuing the series.

A sweet & hot romance set amidst political turmoil

If you could sum up The Fearless Highlander in three words, what would they be?

Enemies to Lovers! The romance features two unlikely leading characters: a warrior fiercely loyal to the Jacobite cause, Hugh MacIain, and the daughter of an English colonel, Charlotte Hill. There is no tolerance among either the Scots or the English for the star-crossed lovers to have a future together.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fearless Highlander?

One of the most memorable moments to me was the scene where Charlotte feeds Hugh because he was unable to do so himself was touching and funny. At the time, Hugh had no idea that she was the daughter of the man who was cruelly keeping him in chains.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Joel Froomkin?

This was the first time I've ever listened to Joel Froomkin narrate. Joel has a very beautiful brogue, but, unfortunately, it was so thick I had a hard time understanding him. I actually replayed multiple parts over and over trying to decipher what he was saying. Oftentimes, I ended up giving up and proceeding with the story. I have glanced at other reviews and there are many others who had no difficulty at all with his performance and loved his narration – so I would encourage you to check out one of his performances for yourself. Truly, you may not have the same problem that I did.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The story embodies a time of much Scottish turmoil. Amy’s extensive researching is brilliantly evident as the fictional historical romance is interwoven into the thick of true events during the reign of William of Orange when the English occupied Fort William leading up to the Glencoe massacre in 1692. I was aghast at the underhandedness of the English. Their atrocities against the Scottish people made me sad and mad.

Any additional comments?

Amy is one of my favorite go-to authors. I know when I pick up one of her books, I’m in for a treat. The Fearless Highlander is a well-paced, action-packed tale packed with history and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys well-written Scottish romances. I look forward to reading the next book in this series, The Valiant Highlander, soon! It will be the story of Sir Donald MacDonald, the Baronet of Sleat, and trews-wearing, musket-wielding, redheaded Mary of Castleton!

Wow

Wow! What a story! It was one of the best I've listened to so far. Ms. Jarecki writes her tales in a way that touch the soul while giving the reader a wee bit of a history lesson. I loved how it grabbed my attention and I couldn't wait to get back to it. The main characters, Hugh and Charlotte, are so well suited despite their many differences and they show that love is indeed a powerful force, compassion is never to be dismissed. Loved the HEA ending, as usual the author doesn't leave the reader with questions. Looking forward to the next one.

This is the first of Mr. Froomkin's narrations I listened to and it is exceptional.
His voices are many, I never had to wonder who was speaking and the most important thing for me is that I didn't just hear the words, I felt them, every emotion, sigh, cry, anger, joy, love. I got lost in the story. My fave was the voice he gave Hugh, also his Father's and Charlotte's come in close second. Thank you for a most pleasant experience. You've got a new fan! :D

The story is worth the money. But the narrator UNBELIEVABlE. I could not believe this was one person. The only negative is the book cover. Is that Ben Stiller? I will be looking for books with this same narrator!!!!
