Featured Article: Misery—Book vs. the Movie

In the pantheon of adaptations of the works of Stephen King, of which there are literally dozens, there is one that stands out at the top: Misery, the 1990 film directed by Rob Reiner, starring James Caan and Kathy Bates. The movie still holds the distinct honor of being the only adaptation of a Stephen King book to win an Oscar. That accolade went to Kathy Bates, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her show-stopping portrayal of Annie Wilkes. Bates also won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture: Drama for her shattering performance.

King pulls a Tolkien

Eyes of the Dragon is Steven King's first departure from Horror into the realm of Epic Fantasy. It is different from King's standard fair and I admit I only picked this up because the book's principal antagonist, Randal Flagg, later reappears in King's Dark Tower series. That said, I was very impressed with what I found here. Eyes of the Dragon is fantastic and stands as a great novel all on its own.

Also, Bronson Pinchot's narration is absolutely terrific. The echo he uses when voicing the dark wizard Flagg is particularly bone chilling. Highly recommended!

Great reader!

The reader simply makes a good book even better!! Great job to him. The book is great if you want a short break from reality with a classic fairy tale like feel.

Classic Story, Terrible Narration

If you could sum up The Eyes of the Dragon in three words, what would they be?

Classic Dark Tower Tale

What other book might you compare The Eyes of the Dragon to and why?

Any of the stories within the universe of King's Dark Tower Series.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I was initially excited to see that Bronson Pinchot narrated this book -- I mean, he is famous for his flamboyant characters and various accents!
However, he rarely uses any inflection or characterization for the different voices of the characters, and when he does ... it's just ... not pleasing.

Please re-record this book

The book was outstanding, absolutely no complaints about the content. But the performance was laughable. The recording quality was varied, which is not a good sign. There were many parts that had very clearly been dubbed in afterwards, because they sounded completely different. The narrator gave Flagg a voice that could barely be heard half of the time, or screaming the other half.
I will purchase many more Steve King books, but will never buy another book read by this narrator.

Great family book

This would make a great book for I would say about 10 and up. Depending on your child and how easily scared. It is a "clean" book as in no swearing and sex and there is some violence but not bad at all. It is a enjoyable story but do not get if you are looking for anything scary. The audible version is great and would make a great book to listen to on a family trip.
