Publisher's Summary

In The Expository Genius of John Calvin, Dr. Steven J. Lawson delves into the practices, commitments, and techniques that made John Calvin, the great Reformer of the 16th century, such an effective preacher during his long pastorate at Saint Pierre Cathedral in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Lawson identifies 32 distinctives of Calvin's preaching, providing comments from Calvin's writings, quotations from Reformation scholars, and examples from Calvin's own sermons to reinforce his points. In the end, Dr. Lawson finds in Calvin a strong model for expository preaching and calls on modern pastors to follow the Reformer's example.

Excellent, inspirational, convicting, and helpful.

This book was excellent. The flow of thought was easy to follow. The language was simple and to the point. The content was engaging and informative.

This book was inspirational. John Calvin was no doubt a genius, but not a genius who sat idle. He was a busy and hard working genius. This quality of labor is something every expositor is able to mimic, while we may be unable to mimic his genius.

This book was convincing. Do we expositors handle the practice of preaching with due reverence? Do we come to the pulpit Coram Deo? Do we expound Soli Deo Gloria?

This book was helpful. Showing how Calvin approaches the art of preaching is valuable. There is so much value in the example of Calvin’s approach to be gleaned and applied as an expositor who wishes to point his congregation to Christ as doers and not hearers only.

Good for preaching pastors

This book is primarily for a pastor who is preaching on a weekly basis in my opinion. It’s an interesting look at John Calvin‘s expository preaching style.
