Publisher's Summary

Few stories contain heroism, betrayal, ricocheting monarchs, bold stands against repressive authorities, and redemption like this one. And fewer generations have modeled commitment to the gospel and the application of God's Word like the Puritans of England.

In this 12-part series, Dr. Michael Reeves surveys Puritan theology and the work of the Holy Spirit when the Reformation flourished in England. Major milestones of this movement underscore the Puritan's special place in history, as they displayed spiritual wisdom and discernment still benefiting pulpits and believers today.

Good but unbalanced

Well presented and historically interesting, and the speaker is very earnest, but I feel like it overemphasizes the "official" "top down" story, so to speak. In my opinion, the real story of the English Reformation is the story of countless humble, unknown, faithful believers who spread the Gospel over the centuries, in the face of persecution from the official church, without regard to whatever various important people were doing. So much time is spent on the monarchy, barely a sentence about the Lollards. Even William Tyndale gets less time than Henry VIII. While Henry's story is interesting, I believe its impact on the history of God's people is overstated. True believers would've carried on regardless of what religion the King decided to favor.

Wonderful

Reeves does an amazing job with his survey of the English Reformation. He’s not teaching in a dry information regurgitation kind of way but with fountains of grace, faith, and story and a lot of great theology.

Needed for the church today

Every Christian should listen to this book! It certainly left me hungry to know about these great men and women of the faith. So many died, were tortured and imprisoned so that we could have the Bible in our hands today and that we could know the good news of the gospel. It is amazing to see how the enemy has used wicked men to suppress the truth. It was so eye-opening to also see the dangers that come about when religion lies in the hands and power of the government. May we never forget where we came from and why we have the freedom to know the gospel and to read the word of God. Michael Reeves did an amazing job of bringing these stories to life. I could not put this book down!

Not unbiased

This is a religious tract, not unbiased history. I still found it interesting, and it filled in some important gaps in my understanding of the time and the movement.

Enjoyable history

Takes the format of a lecture series. The lecturer is easy to listen to and follow. He has an engaging style and nice voice. This is an overview of the period, together with deep dives into various leading theologians. An excellent introduction.

Truly outstanding

This was such a joy to listen to. I'm so thankful to God for our shared family history in the faith. What shoulders we stand on today as Protestants. Michael Reeves' overview was just perfect. This is actually a series of short lectures rather than a book, but that makes it even better. It is delivered to an audience and he does so brilliantly. I especially loved the historical lectures as he overviewed the events of the beginning of the Reformation onwards. Not only is he a brilliant story teller but his passion for God and for the Puritans comes through so clearly in his voice. His Britishness and the way he'd growl out words at the end of sentences made me chuckle. His love for his subject matter shines through clearly. This is really the best kind of history lesson you could ever have. Absolutely engaging and compelling, delivered with love, and above all, done to the glory of God. Praise the Lord.
