Publisher's summary

The thrilling sequel to S. J. Kincaid's New York Times best-selling novel The Diabolic that TeenVogue.com called "the perfect kind of high-pressure adventure".

It's a new day in the Empire. Tyrus has ascended to the throne with Nemesis by his side, and now they can find a new way forward - one where they don't have to hide or scheme or kill. One where creatures like Nemesis will be given worth and recognition, where science and information can be shared with everyone and not just the elite.

But having power isn't the same thing as keeping it, and change isn't always welcome. The ruling class, the Grandiloquy, has held control over planets and systems for centuries - and they are plotting to stop this teenage Emperor and Nemesis, who is considered nothing more than a creature and certainly not worthy of being Empress.

Nemesis will protect Tyrus at any cost. He is the love of her life, and they are partners in this new beginning. But she cannot protect him by being the killing machine she once was. She will have to prove the humanity that she's found inside herself to the whole Empire - or she and Tyrus may lose more than just the throne. But if proving her humanity means that she and Tyrus must do inhuman things, is the fight worth the cost of winning it?

Whiplash

This book is one I couldn’t put down, BUT it also was constantly giving me whiplash emotionally never knowing who to trust and what was real and almost became predictable that everyone would betray everyone and in that case what’s the point of it all? When there’s no hope there’s no reason or drive for the characters other than rage and revenge which is just needless killing and violence when the original themes and story were so good and could’ve been so much more powerful and thought provoking for an audience. Obviously I’m still deeply enjoying the book and have already bought the third in the trilogy, but my hope is that a sliver of hope returns for our beloved Nemesis, and maybe even for the tainted Emperor Tyrus.

Excellent read!

Just finished this book and absolutely loved it, just like the first book! It’s exciting, action-packed, and still sort of a love story. Narrator does an amazing job portraying the characters. Cannot wait for the 3rd book!

Love this series!

Some parts of the beginning were hard to get through as I read the first and second books back to back. I was frustrated with the main character re-exploring feelings that had been thoroughly covered in the first book. However, the end is amazing and cannot be anticipated. Definitely worth the read.

Incredible

I love Candace Thaxton and that’s the only reason I bought this book. I’m so glad I did. I finished the first two books in about a week. I want more! I hate I have to wait till this fall for the next one. So gripping

WOW!!!

Candace Thaxton does an awesome job narrating this book! My emotions were all over place while listening to this book. I was angry, hopeful, and angry again. S. J. Kincaid (if you read this), I could not put this story down and all I can say is WOW!

Killer Series. Literally.

Holy. Wow. This book is majorly badass. I love when a second book stands up and delivers. YA Sci-Fi is so wickedly delightful these days.

Nemesis should be my new bestie (sorry Laurie!). I mean she's absolutely ruthless when it comes to protecting Tyrus, and I love that. At the same time, for being considered as something less than human, she's so painfully human that it's almost uncomfortable at times.

And that ending. It was like plot twists upon plot twists upon plot twists. My brain is still swirly from how many unexpected moments occurred in just the last few chapters.

I am in love with this series. The only negative is that I have to wait another year to get my hands on book 3, and I'm desperate for it right now.

So much better!

Although the narrator slipped at times, she also seemed to grow some acting skills. as for the story, it's miles better the first. I did feel a little annoyed by the repetitive jerks on this rollercoaster, but holy hell was this astonishingly amazing.
