Story
For eighteen year old Lena O'Sullivan, life is predictable and dull. A future of hard work, marriage to a local boy, and a family of her own one day is all she has to look forward to. People from her background know not to expect too much, but Lena yearns for something different. Malachy Berger was different, for him, the world is at his feet. An only child of a wealthy, if peculiar father, a large inheritance, a beautiful house and a fine education are his due. Nobody is in favour of Lena and Malachy’s friendship, but why not? What harm are they doing? Why is everyone so dead set against it?

Publisher's summary
Berlin, 1944. Ariella Bannon is being hunted. Someone is determined to betray her as a Jew, but she has survived against incredible odds, and the end is in sight. She will be reunited with her precious children, no matter what it takes.
Meanwhile, Liesl and Erich have found a home in Ireland away from the chaos of war-ravaged Europe. As the dark news of what has happened to the Jews filters through, they are torn—love for their mother and their home on one hand, and the profound sense of peace and belonging they have in Ballycreggan on the other. Like all of the other children who escaped Nazi territory on the Kindertransport, they must wait to hear the fate of their loved ones.
For their foster parents, Elizabeth and Daniel, their dearest wish, that Ariella would survive the war, is also their deepest fear. Would her return mean the loss of the children they have come to think of as their own?
As the Third Reich crumbles under relentless Allied bombs, Ariella is careful, but Berlin is a very dangerous place to be, and somebody knows she survived. Can she take one last enormous risk to be reunited with Liesl and Erich or will her betrayer see her finally captured?
The Emerald Horizon is the long awaited sequel to the best-seller, The Star and the Shamrock.

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

Even better than book 1!
I actually enjoyed this book more than the first in the series, which is unusual.
I really aopreciate how the author makes it a point to stress that you can not base a whole people on the actions of a few. Not all Germans were Nazis and not all Russians were rapists and brutes.
Narration was very well done.

Beautifully balanced book
This is the second of the series, and I am quickly falling in love with the characters. It is well written, merging 2 very different cultures into a beautiful narrative. The author has been able to show both sides, charity and atrocities, without minimizing either during a horrific time in world history.

An inspiring story of courage and love
I loved both of Jean Grainger’s books about Arielle. The narration was superb. War is hell. Ms Grainger told it with grace and dignity. Everyone needs to be reminded of how people cared and helped each other, and that most Germans were good people.

Loved this Book!
A great novel about what the Jews had to go thru during Hitler's reign of terror and how families were torn apart to save their children. It also shows what determination a mother has to reunite with her children after years of hiding from the Nazis and how not all Germans hated the Jews and risked their lives to help them. The characters are so realistic that they became real people. If you like stories about WWII you will love this one. Can't wait to read or listen to more of her books. And the people reading this audio book did a great job. Very entertaining!

All the good parts of a story
I loved hearing this book. It was well written to bring a clear picture of the characters and places in the story. It captured my interest all the way through. Unlike some books that take time to “get into” these two books brought me straight into Ballygraygen and Berlin and the scenes of all the action. I highly recommend this book to other listeners and readers.

Excellent book!
I enjoyed both books in this series. I also enjoyed the narration of both audio books. Everything fit together so nicely. Thank you for the love between people without cheesy sex and smutty words. I am going to read or listen to every one of your books.
