Publisher's summary

When Melanie Ross first meets April Hall, she's not sure what to think. What other sixth grade girl wears her blonde hair piled in a twist and flaunts false eyelashes? But when the two girls discover the storage shed outside the A-Z Antiques and Curio Shop, they discover they both love anything to do with ancient Egypt. Soon the friends create the Egypt Game. Dressed up in costumes, they secretly hold ceremonies and dance in the ghostly interior of the shed. As the number of Egyptians begins to grow, so does their fun. Then one day, strange things begin to happen. Soon the players find themselves deep in a dangerous mystery that threatens to end the Egypt Game for good.

Favourite childhood book brought back to life

We used to read this book so much as kids, we’d play imagination games similar to this so it was like reading about ourselves. I loved hearing it brought back to life in an audiobook.

Why would anyone want to ban this?

I kept listening for whatever element caused this book to be targeted for a book ban, and never did figure that out. It’s a fun, quirky story about normal kids who do normal kid things in a normal place. I have no problem with elementary students reading this, and feel a little sad for kids whose parents would deny them the experience..

Delightful Story

What a nice story!! The characters are well drawn so you have a feel for each of the children as the story unfolds. I really enjoyed Alyssa Bresnahan’s narration style.

Don’t know how I missed this book growing up in the 60’s. I think this would be a great introduction to audiobooks for children but the story isn’t just for kids.

Better than I remembered

I read this book when I was young. I decided to listen to help me pass time on an airplane, something not very important or intellectually stimulating. It was even better, because as a young girl, I didn't pick up on so many parts of the story. It brought back nostalgia as well, so the overall enjoyment was so much more. It's a great book, both from a young perspective, and an adult one.

Entertaining story, very well performed

I’ve read and enjoyed a couple of this author’s other books, so I knew that she was a good writer/storyteller. She does a great job writing about children - particularly their inner thoughts and emotions - in a way that is realistic and not patronizing. The narration was also excellent - the narrator made each character’s voice unique with subtle shifts in accent and tone.
