Publisher's summary

Lady Virginia Macon, the recently widowed baroness of Heatherton, has an impossible decision to make. Her late husband's unscrupulous brother demands guardianship of her sons. The courts are on his side, unless she marries someone willing to stand in her late husband's place. Locking her heart away and devoting herself to her children is the only way Virginia can countenance such a decision.

Wearied by the world, Lucas Calvert, earl of Annesbury, is tired of being alone. His wife's passing six years previous left his life gray and empty. His only recourse has been to make life better for those around him, using his considerable wealth and influence. When he learns of Virginia's plight, he knows he can save her and her sons.

During one of the rainiest summers in England's history, Virginia and her children bring light and color back into Lucas' life. But will Virginia's determination to protect her heart destroy their possibility of finding happiness together?

Not my favorite in the series

I love most of this author’s books. However, this one is more play-by-play in nature—he did this, then she did that. Also, I don’t mind children in books as a minor aspect, but I’m not interested in drawn out or frequent interactions with them or their squabbles and petulant behavior. For one, listening to children’s voices and whining in audio, particularly in books about adults, sounds unpleasant to me. Secondly, the children in this story were not as interesting as they were in some of her other stories. And far too much of the book was about them. Otherwise, a clean romance is always appreciated; and this one, though somewhat plodding, has characters with integrity. I'll continue to look for more of her work, because even when they aren't my favorite, they are fun reading.

Loved this story

A widow who has to make difficult decisions to protect her children and in the process not allow society expectations rule her life.

It was in good taste, captivating, and fun to listen to.

I like the fact that it was a clean story no bad words the plot was possible, and it highlights many of the British customs.

Nice balanced story

Okay, so maybe the story was a bit formulaic but for a free audiobook, it was quite good. The style of the reader was perfect for the setting of the book.
I listened to the book when I needed a story that would help me escape from the real world for a bit—and it was perfect for that purpose.

Hero and Heroine

Another great book in a captivating series. I love the fact that both Virginia and Lucas were both healers of hearts and worked together to create a happy life together.

Happiness At Last

Wonderful story. The Earl and Virginia deserved to be happy and the narrator is a very gifted story teller. The children gave humor to the story and the villain, I felt sorry for him. All ended well with a deserving HEA.

Love to the rescue

Love it and was so glad that Lucas came to recuse Virginia and her sons. And the love that grew between them .The Bible says Patience is a virtue!
