Publisher's summary

Filling a huge gap in our spiritual culture, here - at last - is a comprehensive and elegant translation of the 1854 French masterwork of occult philosophy.

The Doctrine and Ritual of High Magic reignited the esoteric spiritual search in the West and led to the emergence of Madame Blavatsky, Manly P. Hall, and the New Age revolution.

Lévi's study of magic is an absolute must for every seeker in occult, esoteric, and druidic realms, but this need has been frustrated by dated and inaccurate translations - until now. Greer, a respected occult scholar, and Mikituk, a masterful translator, collaborate to restore this landmark work to the center of the alternative spiritual canon.

A performance tour de force!

What about Sean Pratt’s performance did you like?

I admit, I was dubious about a narrator being able to tackle this tome - not only because of its obscure subject matter, but because of the incredibly diverse languages and terminology... but Sean Pratt swims through this esoterica as though Hebrew, Latin, French, German, etc. and fin de siècle French culture were every day conversational fare for him. Well done!

Challenging, yet rewarding.

This is not an easy listen due to the broad and complex nature of the work. However, the metaphors presented through out are colorful and profound. The ceremonies and rituals described extensive and intense. One truly gets a glimpse in this classic work of the exacting detail and passionate commitments that Occultists of yesteryear used to practice their craft. Being a curious layman of such things, I found some of this unintentionally humorous, yet enjoyable, especially the elaborate description of what is needed to evoke Satan should one really want to. (Hint: it doesn't actually seem that doing so is really a possibility considering what is involved.) On the other hand, I was touched by the practical practice of duality when it comes to working with the occult. In other words, what is above happens below and vice-versa. For those listeners who are frightened, yet curious, about such things, the writer is very careful to warn you about the idea that balancing darkness and light is crucial in order to avoid getting swept away in something unwanted, whether or not it is real or imagined. Sean Pratt, the narrator, does a tremendous job of handling difficult words and translations. This is very cerebral and challenging stuff, but worth the effort if one is willing to put in the time.

Excellent for the student of Hermeticism

if you are a student of light then this book will unlock more doors toward that ultimate goal. If you are not a true student this book will be hard to understand. Read the Kybalion first.

Smoothly crafted nonsense

I always forget how far off-base these 19th-century magicians were, until I listen to more of their Enlightenment era, pseudoscientific drivel. In many ways, Levi was about as wrong as you can get about magic and metaphysics. On the other hands, his use of language, the translation, and for the most part the narration are beautiful! So it's good poetry if you don't think about it too much. The main problem with the narrator is that he mangles too many foreign words and names; if I had to hear him mispronounce Paracelsus one more time (he says "Paracellus"!) I would have had to steer into opposing traffic...

Regardless of one's beliefs, you must read this .

Understanding of life and nature and how everything you say or do makes a difference. This book explains everything to those who have enough intelligence to understand what was written.

perhaps I am NOT intellectual enough to follow

This book requires way more focused attention than what I have to offer right now. Despite my strongest effort it's just like a bunch of words and I keep having to listen to the same passages over and over again without feeling enriched by the content.

Simply a fantastic translation.

A well done translation of French Occultist Eliphas Levi's The Doctrine and Ritual of High Magic. I was both surprised and elated of just how much of the contents of the book is still relevant to modern Occultism today. I was also a fan of the notations found throughout the pages as they clarified a great deal of obscure references. John Michael Greer and Mark Anthony Mikituk did a wonderful job with the new translation and I highly encourage people interested in the Occult to give this a read. “AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY”

Required reading for the fearless.

⛧ If you are a coward, dimwitted, lazy, or satisfied pass by this book and curse it thoroughly in public and private. Take refuge in your ignorance and so that you may not be exposed to your incompetence. But if you desire truth, grasp it firmly and read it in silent places. Hold your tongue. Witness the verb. ⛧

wow

choc ful of information, but I did fall asleep several times even after adjusting the speed of the narration. his voice was so soothing that I napped very well several times! I also had to track it back two or three chapters and start all over again😒. No matter, I still finished it and it is still a good book.
