Publisher's Summary

The true story of Andrew Wakefield - the man behind the false link between the MMR vaccine and autism - and the conspiracy that fueled a global epidemic, from the prize-winning journalist who broke the story.

From San Francisco to Shanghai, from Vancouver to Venice, controversy over vaccines is erupting around the globe. Fear is spreading. Banished diseases have returned. And a militant “anti-vax” movement has surfaced to campaign against children’s shots.

But why?

In The Doctor Who Fooled the World, award-winning investigative reporter Brian Deer exposes the truth behind the crisis. Writing with the pause-resisting tension of a detective story, he unmasks the players and unearths the facts. Where it began. Who was responsible. How they pulled it off. Who paid.

At the heart of this dark narrative is the rise of the so-called “father of the anti-vaccine movement”: a British-born doctor, Andrew Wakefield. Banned from medicine, thanks to Deer’s discoveries, he fled to the United States to pursue his ambitions and now claims to be winning a “war”.

In an epic investigation spread across 15 years, Deer battles medical secrecy and insider cover-ups, smear campaigns and gagging lawsuits, to uncover rigged research and moneymaking schemes, the heartbreaking plight of families struggling with disability, and the scientific scandal of our time.

Incredible account of a terrible human being.

Anyone claiming this journalist is telling a "political" story is absolutely wrong. He carefully and meticulously lays out the facts to demonstrate an objective truth. Wakefield is a fraud.

When will the liberal elite stop whining about Pres Trump?

Could have been excellent. But, like kids in a candy shop, the liberal media just cannot stop the never ending Trump bashing. Tell the story. Give the facts, the statistics- leave the never ending whining at home. Started with prologue. Total turn off. And, ironically, conveys the very type of bias one would hope an objective journalist would avoid. But alas...no objectivity in our now elite uber liberal unthinking gossip columnists. It’s a shame. Grow up.

insane story, couldn't put it down!

I knew the claim that vaccines cause autism was false but how elaborate and deep the reason behind it was I never knew. This was jaw dropping and made my blood boil. Such a detailed and fantastic read! It makes me want to preach to everyone I know what is really behind the fallacy.

Simply Enlightening

An unflinching look at the doctor that started it all, the reason why being vaccinated is now a political statement. A deep dive on every aspect of the thing, some angles that hadn't occured to me before listening to this book, and a shocking look on how the most at risk people are weoponised, without ever recieving the support and care that would have actually made their lives better.

Autistic people were made scapegoats for some guys huge ego, and that isn't right, not one bit.

Investigative Journalism at its Best!

Good narrative with lots of technical details for evidence. Brian Deer leaves no stone unturned in his quest to reveal the conflict of interest that Doctor Wakefield kept hidden in his clinical studies about a possible connection between the MMR vaccine and autism. This is well written and documented. Don't understand the previous negative reviews of this book. The Audible version was excellent. l finished it in four days.

The author risked a lot to write and publish this book. He also points out the power and dangers of social media, where fake news abounds and unproven conspiracy theories are recycled and float around for years. Readers beware.

hbomberguy sent me!!!!

this is an important piece of literature I think more people need to read (or listen to in my case) due to how badly it exposes Andrew Wakefield for being a total quack and the amount of damage he has caused to so many lives. the narration is a bit dry but it gets the job done and overall I feel very satisfied with the experience.
