Editorial reviews

Editors Select, December 2017

This was the first Michael J. Sullivan book I've ever experienced. That fact might aggravate some of his more dedicated fans, seeing as it's the fourth book in the series ("you have to start at the beginning!"). But I heard that it could be enjoyed as a stand-alone work, and that it definitely can, because I was obsessed immediately. Sullivan's characters really take on a life of their own, especially with Tim Gerard Reynolds giving them such a dynamic performance. Sullivan's sense of pacing is akin to a thriller writer's; each chapter is succinct and compelling, with frequent cliff-hangers that make it impossible to stop listening. Most crucial, perhaps, is the quality and subtle detail of Sullivan's world building - and his synergy with Reynolds - making it easy to dive headlong into this book. —Michael, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

"The pairing of Reynolds's narration with Sullivan's multilayered storytelling is outstanding." — AudioFile Magazine

A daughter vanishes. Two rogues are paid a fortune to find her. It isn't enough.

When Gabriel Winter's daughter mysteriously disappears and is presumed dead, the wealthy whiskey baron seeks revenge. Having lived in Colnora during the infamous Year of Fear, he hires the one man he knows can deliver a bloody retribution — the notorious Duster.

Ride with Royce and Hadrian as the cynical ex-assassin and idealistic ex-mercenary travel to a mysterious old-world city filled with nobles claiming descent from imperial aristocracy. Riyria's job appears easy: discover what happened to the missing duchess and, if she lives, bring her home...if not, punish those responsible. But nothing is simple in the crowded, narrow, mist-filled streets of Rochelle, where more than one ancient legend lurks.

Excellent as always!

Written with great warmth and great, insightful and sometimes very funny dialogue. The Riyria books keep getting better for each new one he writes, filling in the bigger story of Elan.

Yet Another Wonderful Adventure with Riyria

I was so excited when I read there was to be another story of Hadrian and Royce. I pre-ordered and was not disappointed. I have already read (listened) to all of the related stories TWICE. I’ll admit it, I’m addicted. And as usual, the narration is perfection.

Michael J Sullivan and Tim Gerold Reynolds are audible perfection.

I have followed the duos Sullivan and Reynolds AND Royce and Hadrian from the beginning and feel privileged to still be a part of their worlds. Thank you for another chapter that doesn’t disappoint

editing issue?

the sound would come in normal, but then it would get really quiet. I thought it was my headset that was the problem, but it wasn't.

also, not the best work of Mr. Sullivan. I'm a huge Rayira fan, but unanswered questions still remain. unless that was what he was going for, then OK. I'll wait for a sequel. But I would rate this story my least favorite of the series.

keep the stories coming

The interaction between Hadrian and Royce never gets old. in my opinion, it's still the best buddy series I've come across.

More history, more character

Have you listened to any of Tim Gerard Reynolds and Michael J. Sullivan ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to all of Michael J. Sullivan's available prior work about the world where Riyria exists; Riyria Revelations, The Riyria Chronicles, and The Legends of the First Empire. I enjoyed this book primarily because it gives up even more detail about Royce and Hadrian's background and relationship, more tidbits about their past, more of Royce's mostly-internal debate about Hadrian, and some of the things that make them special. We're introduced to a new supernatural being, and Winter's Daughter. Both of them are interesting, and Winter's daughter is very likable and relatable.

My favorite is still Riyria Revelations, and all others are measured by how well they combined with or explain that story. This book isn't as compelling as any of the Revelations, but still very enjoyable and satisfying. (As other's have mentioned, I think I would be entertained by Tim Gerard Reynalds even if he read real estate contracts into the microphone.) Mr. Sullivan's books are still my favorite, and very few audio books, with the exception of the Bobiverse by Dennis E. Taylor, comes close.

Not my favorite in the series

I love this series, but I found this book predictable and hard to finish. I’m very sorry to say this because I love these characters! Others may like it, of course, and if I’d hadn’t already read all the other excellent books with these characters, I would have liked it too.
