refreshing combination, but..

Over the top, overly dramatic, and poignant, this love story was funny and heartwarming with interesting, strong characters you could care about. Fans of Amanda Quick will probably like this book.

This book has a suspenseful, twisty subplot that kept me guessing, but the violent scenes, especially juxtaposed against sweet interactions between the two main characters, made me cringe a tiny bit. I think some readers, not expecting, for example, a torture scene in a romance novel, might be unpleasantly surprised.

Overall, I thought it was a fresh combination of romance and well-developed mystery that I'd never experienced in a romance novel. This author really has a talent with mystery and I look forward to see what direction she goes with her writing in the future.

INTERESTING TWISTS AND TURNS

A very enjoyable story. I had not listened to a historical romance in a while, and I was glad to have picked this one.

Loved the main characters. Very stubborn the two of them.

Love comes slowly for two people who don’t believe in it, or don’t want anything to do with it.

Good twists and turns. I thought I had the villain figured out, but I was wrong which was a nice surprise.

The narration was excellent.

It was worth the credit, so I would recommend it.

Ms. Michaels first novel is a winner in my book!

I love the suspense factor in this book! It is both a murder mystery as well as a historical romance. For a debut book Maddison Michaels has hit the mark. I can hardly wait for her 10th book if this is a sample of her early writings.
I was guessing until the very end on who the murder was. There is great chemistry between Sophie and Devlin. I adored the play between Devlin and Danial, Sophie's protective older brother. There is some violence. The killer has killed several times. I have read much more graphic torture scenes in Medieval romance. There is only one sex scene but it is done well.
Ms Michaels is one of my "Buy as soon as the book is released" authors.
I absolutely adore Justine Eyre. I think she is an amazing narrator. She does several different voices and dialect well. I can't praise her enough on her performance.
Definitely recommend both the author and the narrator.

MY ONLY COMPLAINT

I wish romance authors would not use the Lord's
name in vain ex. G. DAMN.

Great mystry & romance

This is the first time I have read this author and really loved the writing. It was alittle slow in some places, but I found the mystry great and did not guess the killer until the very end.
The H/H spent a lot of time together and when they evolved to the point where they felt love, it was believable. I liked both the H/H and they did not do the usual "stupid" things to move the plot along. They seemed to act in character.
I can hardly wait for the next book from this author. The story was so good I even liked the narrator, which I normally find a little problematic.
This book was worth the credit and I recommend it. A nice holiday read.

A bit too graphically violent

Sophie is a well drawn heroine & Devlin an intriguing Duke. Well written but I really prefer less gory detail about murders. Because of this aspect, it’s not a book I will want to listen to again. Even though Justine Eyre reads it magnificently, I don’t like the visions of violence the author conjures in such detail.

Good

I enjoyed this book. Had some twists and turns and kept me guessing who the murderer was. There is one bedroom scene. On a scale of 1 to 5 it’s a 3 for sizzle.

GREAT NARRATION BY JUSTINE EYRE

Devlin Markham Duke of Huntington needs to run telegraph lines across Queen Victoria's lands. So he goes to meet with her. In turn for her permission to run the telegraph lines. He must marry. Queen Victoria feels it time for him to marry and produce and heir to his Prestigious Dukedom. After all he is one of the most powerful and riches peers in all of England. The queen has also picked his bride. Lady Sophie Wolcott sister to an Earl.

Devlin had met Lady Sophie at his house party when she had fallen out of a tree and landed in the azalea bushes. Sophie works diligently at Greys Orphanage as a volunteer raising money and teaching the orphans skills that will help them gain employment. She had done so with one such orphan and who became a friend Jane. Jane has become a maid. But she overhears some disturbing nefarious plot that cause her to run. Jane is viscously murdered. This opens the plot for a pretty good "who done it" murder mystery and why three servants working in titled households have been murdered.

Devlin makes a marriage proposal that Sophie cannot refuse. There attraction grows and together they set out to find out who murdered Jane and who stole Sophie's mail. One of her footmen is found murdered too.

What I really liked was the way Devlin and Sophie grow into love. It's what I call a slow burn. Sophie is head strong and Devlin is trying to protect her from a murderer. But is the murder really just after Sophie or is there some other reason or person the murderer wants to kill?

This was a really entertaining story. I was surprised at how much I liked it. I am not a murder mystery fan. Its well written. A team of really good secondary characters. Like Aunt Mable. Unveiling the murdered was well written with a twist to it.

Hidden in this regency style romp is a very twisted tale of revenge... it is well done. i truly enjoyed it, twice!

No body does this genre better than Justine Eyre.
