Publisher's summary

Peter Brett’s The Desert Spear continues the post-apocalyptic adventure he began in his highly acclaimed debut, The Warded Man.

The world remains under siege by demonkind stalking the land when the sun goes down. But a new hero has risen from the desert. Claiming to be the mythical Deliverer, Ahmann Jardir now rides alongside the allied desert tribes of Krasia. Jardir and his fellows are on an epic quest to vanquish the demons plaguing the world and bring humanity back from the brink of extinction.

More Warded Man goodness.

I strongly suggest reading the Warded Man first before picking this sequel up. Also, be aware that the first half of the book is from Jardir's point of view (as indicated in the synopsis). That being said, if you enjoyed the first book, then you will enjoy this one as well. The characters are definitely maturing, but also have not changed radically from who they were before. We are also given a slight glimpse into the inner workings of the Core and the demons that live there, along with being introduced to some new elite demons that aren't the simple, mindless brutes that sprout up from the ground every night. I was very happy that they kept Pete Bradbury as the narrator as he does an excellent job. I look forward to grabbing the third book as soon as it is released.

a tremendous story!

And so we travel into a new world, or maybe not. The intricate descriptions and the cultural mores are enough to satisfy an amateur cultural anthropologist, while balancing the information in and through a fantasy epic that is at the front of the line!
Take the trip! It will not disappoint.

Good story, but too many characters

The Desert Spear is a good follow-up to The Warded Man, but it isn't of the same caliber. It is a good story, but it drifts away from the story of Arlen, The Warded Man, and focuses too much on other characters. And too many, if you ask me.

This is a come fault I find with much that exists in the genre of Fantasy. The story flows, but what made the first book hum along is missing. Leesha, and Rojer and more front and center and the book rewinds and takes us back into the life of Jardir (who is the main character of this tale).

Everything eventually starts to catch up later on, but it takes a while. The story makes sense, but it doesn't flow well with the first story of the series until later on in the book.

It's worth a read, and a quality story. But, if you like The Warded Man, and The Warded Man in particular, this story has a different focus, so be ready for that.

A welcome surprise, better than the first!!!!!

Brett has outdone himself!!! After the Warded Man, I absolutely HATED a certain character. This book showing how and why he was betrayer made me not only like him but also to respect him! Well played Mr. Brett, well played!!!!

Another home run in the demon cycle series

Would you listen to The Desert Spear again? Why?

Absolutely. There's so much in this book i'm sure i missed something the first time around. It was so gripping I actually started listening to it at night before going to bed instead of just back and forth to work like I normally do. amazing story

What did you like best about this story?

Great overall story with lots of stuff going on and very character focused. Believable characters put into situations where they have to make hard decisions. Brett's characters are on par with GRR Martin, but you dont have to worry about one dying every time you turn around.

What about Pete Bradbury’s performance did you like?

Bradbury's performance is excellent. He gives a great dimension to each of the characters and is consistent throughout the book.

Fantastic second installment

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's a fantastic book and a great reading with loads of characters and development. Some of their actions make me mad but all the more proof that it's a book worth reading if it's enough to actually make me care about the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Arlan, his character made a lot of progress during this book and in most cases for the better. Dealt with problems from his past which I was really hoping would happen eventually.

Which character – as performed by Pete Bradbury – was your favorite?

Pete is a really wonderful voice to listen to and I don't think I'll be tired of it by the end of the 100 hours of audio. I can't say I really had a favorite that he portrayed.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not without spoiling the book, but it goes along with Arlan

Any additional comments?

The book has a lot of padding but make no mistake, I'm never bored listening to it. And I'm always hungry for more.
