Publisher's Summary

Sam McCready is The Deceiver, one of the Secret Intelligence Service's most unorthodox and most valued operatives, a legend in his own time. The end of the cold war has, however, strengthened the hand of the Whitehall mandarins, to whom he seems about as controllable as Genghis Khan, so Sam is to have his fate decided at a special hearing.

As part of the proceedings, four of Sam's key operations are reviewed: a clandestine mission into East Germany in 1985 to contact the top Russian spy General Pankratin; a KGB colonel who wants to defect; an audacious Qaddafi-inspired plot to ship arms to the IRA; and the occasion when McCready presided over the aftermath of political murder and mayhem in the Caribbean....

superb short stories

Where does The Deceiver rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Again this is Fredrick Forsyth at the top of his game. Each story is really well crafted. Very different from each other and full of excitement. All to do with the secret service and the cold war.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character in all the short stories McCready was my favourite. He triumphs in all the stories, and so he should he was very, very good

What about Christian Rodska’s performance did you like?

Really, really good. He has the ability to change accents so well. Because it is short stories each story is in a different location and Christian Rodska is brilliant at each and every voice. It makes the listening so much more enjoyable, rather like listening to a play rather than a book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would love to have listened to it in one sitting, but it is 17 hours long, as it is I stayed in my kitchen cooking and baking far too much so that I could listen for longer.

Any additional comments?

I have over 200 audio books and Fredrick Forsyth is so near the top of my all time favourite books, I listen to them several times and always hear something I missed first time round.

Not what I expected

What made the experience of listening to The Deceiver the most enjoyable?

I'm not sure how true the characters are behind the book, but they seem very very real and that just makes the book a great listen. It's as though I'm there alongside the action.

What did you like best about this story?

How close it seemed to real life

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

How some situations appeared so normal and then they turned out to be so dangerous. The jobs some people to keep us safe.

Any additional comments?

Frederick Forsyth at his best..

What did you like most about The Deceiver?

I've always liked Frederick Forsyth - his plots are intricate and the detail total convincing. He is a thorough writer who totally pulls you into the plot. This is one of his best I think, almost several stories in one book, all linked together. I just couldn't put this down

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sam McCready - down to earth, quietly skilled and totally competent

What about Christian Rodska’s performance did you like?

He managed to create very separate characters which made the story all the more convincing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When an old east german spy .. nearly gave it away !

Any additional comments?

Excellent story with a strong basis in fact

This story is well researched and quite believable. The new, younger and IT adept heads of SIS wanting to make redundant a cold war spy. Basically knowledge and hands-on experience against the new high-tech order.

This book is typical of Frederick Forsythe; imaginative, intriguing and captivating. I thoroughly enjoyed it and followed it by listening to The Fist of God which is another really good listen.

The narrator does an excellent job and actually adds to the story.

I give a high recommendation to this audio book.

Brilliant example of the Genre.

Modern cybercrime can't inspire such stories. This is 4 course distillation of Frederick Forsythe's expertise. Listen and enjoy.
