BEST BEGINER GUIDE

I was always curious about the term dark web. This audio book is surely one of the best method to get to know about the origin and all the myths and facts about dark web.
It's free so must read for an enthusiast

Good for an introduction to the basic facets

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Audio quality was somewhat poor, especially in certain interviews. I'd describe it as mobile-phone grade recording. Overall, I felt it was a good first introduction to the issues hosted on the Dark Web. However, it is also highly sensationalised, which is somewhat ironic considering episode 9 features an interview about whistleblowing which details how people are less likely to approach journalists who simply write "DARK WEB BAD!", which is almost exactly what is happening in this series. I would recommend the series to those wanting an overview of the negative aspects of the Dark Web, but if you want more technical information and a balanced view of the non-insidious activities which take place, look elsewhere.

An insightful 10-part documentary 5*

An insightful 10-part documentary by Technology journalist, Geoff White (Channel 4 News).

I learnt a lot.

1. The birth of the dark web
2. The untold story of the dark web
3. Bitcoin’s days are numbered
4. How not to buy a gun on the dark web
5. Hackers for hire
6. The virus kingpin
7. Cyber crime Inc.
8. The child porn paradox
9. A dark force for good
10. Anonymity on trial

Found everything brilliant except part 10 (34 minutes); a group of knowledgeable people discuss anonymity and the dark web. Compared to what preceded it, this episode was rather dull.

Fascinating history

I have a computer science background and whilst I had a passing understanding of technologies like Tor and bitcoin, the history of the technology was new to me and very well presented. The Silk Road saga typically takes all the headlines so was grateful to get a broader picture of what's really going on across the so called "dark web". Unsurprisingly there's plenty of murky goings-on if you know where to look, but it manages not to get too think-of-the-children overly dramatic despite lengthy focus on the shadier topics typically associated with the dark web.

Episodes rattle along at a nice pace. Being a geek I wouldn't have minded a little more detail of the underlying tech, but I expect I'm the minority!

A fascinating show and leant far more than I expected.

A great introductory series into the dark web

This show takes you right to the start of how the dark web was born, and how it's changed and where it is today. The show features interviews that provide lots of information without feeling academic. It is well produced and goes at a pace that leaves you both entertained and informed. A great background listen. I highly recommend this.

Interesting, accessible to techies & non-techies

Geoff takes the listener through some aspects of the dark web in a way that's accessible to non-technical people, but still fascinating to those working in the tech industry. Some publications "dumb down" technical matters too far, and it was good to see that hadn't happened here.

There are interviews with people from various walks of life - law enforcement, "hackers", victims of abuse and key figures in the creation of "The Dark Web", etc. and these gave a really interesting insight into the topic. The panel session in the final episode was particularly interesting.

Some interviews "in the field" had poorer audio quality, but for me that's journalism. Geoff met people in spaces they felt comfortable, so hopefully their answers were more truthful and insightful.

Would recommend.

The Dark Web - exposed

Geoff White presents an excellent coverage of this intriguing topic with a superb balance of interviews. The technical detail and actual experience of people in the field give it credibility and my full attention! Well worth the time to hear this through, and inspiring to learn more. With appreciation for the effort to create this! Jennifer Elwin

Just go listen too the “case-file” podcast on “Silk Road” it’s three parts and far more interesting than this 10 part “bit”on self indulgent ego driven trash....

Amateur hour

The dark web is a fascinating topic, but I learnt nothing new here. The production was clearly done extremely cheap, with poor audio recordings featuring background noise and static. The fact the author is a journalist explains the typical style of mainstream media over-dramatisation of the content including the annoying intro/outro of every episode. Speaking of which, the journalist really should not be narrating his own content with a lisp.

This is an amazing topic, but you should look elsewhere (American Kingpin) for less biased, higher quality content.
