Publisher's summary

Follow the world’s greatest detective you’ve never heard of in this madcap middle grade mystery for fans of A Series of Unfortunate Events and Enola Holmes.

After twelve-year-old John Boarhog’s mom dies, the last thing he wants is to be schlepped off to the Jersey Home for Boys, where kids are forced to make skinny jeans for hipsters and are fed nothing but kale. Instead, he makes himself a snug home in the ceiling of the New York Museum of Natural History, where he reads anything he can get his hands on and explores the artifacts after hours.

But when a rare Egyptian ruby—the highlight of the museum’s new exhibit—goes missing, John is accused of the crime. That is until the unpredictable Inspector Toadius McGee sweeps in to wrestle control of the case, certain that the true culprit is a notorious criminal he’s been tracking for years.

John quickly becomes the Watson to Toadius’s Holmes as they race from Broadway to back alleys to a speak-easy that only serves root beer. And along the way, John uncovers secrets about his own past, including that he’s a lot more involved in this web of endearing ne’er-do-wells than he ever could have imagined.

A love letter to classic middle grade, Egypt’s Fire introduces a remarkable new duo that will steal your heart as surely as it leaves you begging for their next grand adventure.

Hilarious story and vivid storytelling!

The voice acting made the story coke to life and the story was equal parts gripping and hilarious. One of the best MG books I've read in a hot minute!

Engaging and fun book!

This book is very well written. The characters are fun and larger than life. There are moments that are legitimately laugh out loud. I really appreciated the depth of plotting and storytelling - the author never took the cliched approach of building suspense by having the characters not communicate or be unbelievably dumb about things. Everything fits intentionally and seamlessly into a wonderful story that engaged both me and my 12 year old son! The narrator for the audiobook did a great job.

Amazing fun

Tom Phillips has an amazing imagination in thinking up plots and twists and cliffhangers and laugh out loud characters. And James Fougey has just as much imagination in voicing all the characters - from a young boy (John, our hero who lives in a museum), to a crazy magician, an Indiana Jones type Detective Inspector, a scary big home for boys master, a dancing actress, to a talking monkey and, of course, the Mauve Moth, an uncatchable jewel thief. What fun to go along on their misadventures! And there are surprises and mischief all along the way. You must listen to this delightful, wild audiobook mystery for kids?? Hey adults will love it too!

Not Just a Kid's Book!

I haven't had a middle schooler in quite some time, but this book was recommended to me and I'm so glad! it's a laugh out loud, suspensful, page- turner that leaves you wanting more! The characters are complex enough that you feel for them and the plot is one well-written twist after another. The narrator does an amazing job. I can't wait for the next one!
