Acerca de esta escucha
Examine the profound impact of the Crusades with acclaimed Church historian and best-selling author Christopher Bellitto.
Few events have affected the course of civilization as profoundly as the Crusades, a centuries-long period of violent conflict and competition between Islam and Christianity. The Crusades brought destruction and violence to the third monotheistic faith of Judaism, as well. Resurfacing frequently in present-day political conversations about clashes between faiths and cultures, the troubling legacy of the Crusades is undeniable.
In this masterful audio course from award-winning professor Christopher Bellitto, you’ll examine the five major crusading movements from multiple perspectives, gaining a deeper knowledge of what the Holy Land means to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. You’ll also explore the concepts of “just war” and jihad that dominated during the Middle Ages. Along the way you’ll learn about Crusade arts, letters, and architecture; military orders like the Templars and Hospitallers; and the state of Christian-Muslim relations today.
Simply put, to understand the Crusades is to gain profound insight into the historical course of civilization and the profound contradictions of religious war and human nature itself. You’ll be in good hands with Prof. Bellitto, known for his ability to bring clarity to complex historical events. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn with him today.
This course is part of the Learn25 collection and comes with a free PDF study guide.

This series traces western European civilization - with detours to the East - from the transformation of the Roman Empire to a thousand-year medieval period that started slowly before 1000, flowered for 300 years, and then declined sharply with the Black Death and social revolts until Constantinople fell in 1453 and Columbus sailed in 1492.

Alexander the Great (ca. 356-323 BCE) was a Macedonian general who brought Greek civilization to the edge of modern-day India. After studying the Iliad, he believed himself to be Achilles reincarnated, imitating the hero of the epic poem in his own military campaigns. Even before he died barely into his 30s, the legends surrounding him were larger than life. In this compelling new audio course, you’ll explore the history and lore surrounding this real man and mythic figure, often by consulting the ancient sources themselves.

The very word "reformation" is shrouded in conflict, bringing to mind new beginnings, partisan church politics, and the dawn of a modern world vision. Indeed, when you hear it, you probably think of a single event - Martin Luther posting The Ninety-Five Theses on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg in 1517. The truth, however, is much more nuanced - and interesting - than that. Join award-winning historian, Prof. Christopher M. Bellitto, PhD, in The Reformations, a fascinating journey through Church history.

Not since the Civil War had the American national consciousness been as strained as it was by the conflict in Southeast Asia. Indeed, the controversies that the Vietnam War spurred on the home front are more familiar to many Americans than the policies and motives that guided the conflict. The History of the Vietnam War fills that gap. From a distance of 50 years, you will reexamine the war and its lessons. Throughout, Prof. Brigham sheds light on the United States and its place in the world today.

World War II was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, involving the majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—forming two opposing military alliances. The major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities into the war effort. It was by far the deadliest conflict in human history, resulting in 70 to 85 million fatalities, due to actual battles as well as genocides (the Holocaust), starvation, massacres, and disease.

In this powerful book, the renowned exorcist of Rome tells of his many experiences in his ministry as an exorcist doing battle with Satan to relieve the great suffering of people in the grip of evil. The importance of the ministry to "expel demons" is clearly seen in the Gospels, from the actions of the Apostles, and from Church history. Fr. Amorth allows the listener to witness the activities of the exorcist, to experience what an exorcist sees and does.

Great Intro
This was the intro into the Crusades I was looking for. It strikes a good balance between holistic and comprehensive. I got a good feel for the context, history, and implications (I.e. the current politics). The book also went on some interesting tangents about the myths of the Crusades, the arts and lit born from the Crusades, and shared perspectives about the Crusades from Muslim and Jewish sources. I feel primed with a good framework to begin further exploration.
The audio has some edits which are noticeable but not distracting.
