Story4.5 out of 5 stars 525
Jacqueline Keys was ostracized from her small hometown of Pine Springs, Texas, when she was 17, sent away because she was gay. Fifteen years later - long after she'd hitch-hiked to Los Angeles, put herself through college, and had written her first best seller - Jacqueline is persuaded to go back to the tiny town of Pine Springs after her father's death. The quick trip she'd envisioned for the funeral turns into weeks as she learns her father's business is suddenly hers to manage. And she is also again face-to-face with the woman who, as a teen, had been Jackie's first crush.

Dr. Carly Cambridge, wildlife biologist, returns to the Texas Gulf Coast to manage the latest Habitats for Nature project, restoring the woods and wetlands to their natural state. She's devoted to the environmental cause with a passion usually reserved for a lover - something she hasn't had since a disastrous love affair 10 years earlier. Having sworn off women and relationships, She's content to live her life alone, focusing on her latest project. Wildlife photographer Pat Ryan, duped into volunteering her talents to Habitats for Nature, wants no part of the overzealous Dr. Cambridge.

Publisher's summary
Jill and Carrie - both married with teenage children - meet one day during Jill's lunch break at a local park. Soon a friendship is forged. A friendship that deepens with each visit.
Jill's husband still lives and breathes the coach's life, a life that leaves him little time to spare for Jill. Left on her own more and more, Jill finds herself searching for the indefinable something that has been missing all her life.
Married to a successful businessman, Carrie Howell retired early from a career in real estate to spend more time with her teenage boys and to pursue her lone passion - painting. She, too, has felt for some time that something is missing from her world.
The Cottage is the story of two women pulled by a force stronger than their marriages, stronger than themselves. The story of Jill and Carrie. Two women. One love.

Beautiful love story
It seems like I read this book so many years ago. I read it in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. Same thing with the audio, this book just captivates you and you want to keep listening. Yes, I cried but I'll probably listen to it again and yes, I recommend it. Abby did wonderful as usual. I agree with those who say Abby should narrate every audio book, she's simply the best!

Just.......
Usually this combo is 100% win. This one really misses the mark. Main character is kind of a horrible person aside from the budding relationship. Very short. There was a lot of room for more depth in this story but it just didn’t deliver. AC did a great job as always but that’s really not enough to save this short fairly disturbing look at this woman’s life

Love lived in the soul lasts through eternity.
oh my what a gut churning kind of love story. Jill and Carrie could not imagined they would meet. They did not know how their souls would connect. It would change both their live and bring a love neither had known. I was so frustrated with Jill's husband and teenage daughter. They expected her to take the lack of interest they showed in her life and give her time to them when they were ready. oh and her mother inlaw was just completely easy to dislike. Abby Craden gave beautiful voice to the main characters and the winning voices of spouse and daughter were perfect. Not your usual love story but Gerri Hill never disappoints.

It broke my heart and I can’t wait to listen to it again
Wow... What a beautifully written story. Gerri Hill quickly became a favorite with the Stars at Night, then several other books later I couldn’t wait for the release of the Cottage. Definitely not a “typical” love story but with well developed characters and Queen Abby Craden breathing life with her narration, it was so breathtakingly beautiful. The ending broke my heart but sometimes that’s what love does, and it was worth every minute.

I love Gerri Hill's books, but you CAN'T kill off one of the two romantic leads! especially before they've even truly gotten a life started. That is just evil. Also, I think the Marx brothers said it best when they said "WHY A DUCK?!"

Sad ending - could not finish
No happy ever after ending. I got to 1/2 way and read other reviews and realised it was not going to end well. So I stopped after the couple got together. In my universe they ended up happy ever after and if I don't listen to the rest of the story then it is true for me. Beautifully read by Abby Craden (as per) and a lovely story - bar the sad ending.

Over too soon
Loved this little book, my only complaint is it ended too soon. I became invested in the characters and was sorry to have it end. Abbey does a great job as always.

The isolated, sleepy little village of Timber Falls—built on the bend of a swift mountain river—swells during the summer months as tourists flock to town to run the river, lured there by the Class IV and Class V rapids. A gruesome murder of a college student—a river rat—brings the FBI to town. Lynn Carter, a disgraced LAPD detective, was offered an out—a position on a team of unorthodox FBI agents. When her commander sent her to Timber Falls—a town by only the stretch of the imagination—she had no idea she would find her peace there. No idea she might find love.
