Story
The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Traumatic experiences leave a “living legacy” of effects that often persist for years and decades after the events are over. Historically, it has always been assumed that retelling the story of what happened would resolve these effects. However, survivors report a different experience: Telling and re-telling the story of what happened to them often reactivates their trauma responses, overwhelming them rather than resolving the trauma.

Publisher's Summary
Those affected by complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) commonly feel as though there is something fundamentally wrong with them - that somewhere inside there is a part of them that needs to be fixed. Though untrue, such beliefs can feel extremely real and frightening. Difficult as it may be, facing one’s PTSD from unresolved childhood trauma is a brave, courageous act, and with the right guidance, healing from PTSD is possible.
Clinical psychologist Dr. Arielle Schwartz has spent years helping those with complex PTSD - also referred to as C-PTSD - find their way to wholeness. She also knows the territory of the healing firsthand, having walked it herself.
This audiobook provides a map to the complicated, and often overwhelming, terrain of C-PTSD with Dr. Schwartz’s knowledgeable guidance helping you find your way.
In The Complex PTSD Workbook, you’ll learn all about C-PTSD and gain valuable insight into the types of symptoms associated with unresolved childhood trauma, while applying a strength-based perspective to integrate positive beliefs and behaviors.
Features of The Complex PTSD Workbook include:
- Information about common PTSD misdiagnoses such as bipolar disorder, ADHD, anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, and substance abuse, among others.
- Explorations of common methods of PTSD therapy including somatic therapy, EMDR, CBT, DBT, and mind-body perspectives.
- Chapter takeaways that encourage thoughtful consideration and writing to explore how you feel as you review the material presented in relation to your PTSD symptoms.
The Complex PTSD Workbook aims to empower you with a thorough understanding of the psychology and physiology of C-PTSD, so you can make informed choices about the path to healing that is right for you and discover a life of wellness free of C-PTSD that used to seem just out of reach.
Praise for the book:
"This book is a valuable resource for all those affected by complex PTSD, allowing them to be informed and active as partners in the therapeutic healing process.” (Jim Knipe, PhD, author of EMDR Toolbox: Theory and Treatment of Complex PTSD and Dissociation)

Excellent primer and stand alone resource
This book is written for clients and has some tidbits for clinicians. It also has a lot of pragmatic information. The narrator's presentation was not congruent with the material. Prosody was monotone and sentences bled into each other without much room to breathe into what was shared.

Question about additional pdf
I have a question regarding the included pdf worksheet for this book, I thought I heard it was part of the purchase of the book and was wanting to start on it now and can't find it in audible or the Amazon details for this. I gave it 4 stars bc it's come highly recommended by people who have a lot of knowledge and experience, as well as my own personal trust and respect to believe in their opinions. I will leave a better review when I get finished with it. If anyone has any ideas on where I can find this worksheet, please let me know if you can! Thanks so much!

Well-written, terribly narrated
I love the content and the accompanying PDF. The editing is pure crap. Based solely on how the audio is pieced together youd think the book was printed entirely without punctuation and is one big run-on sentence that sounds barely more human than AI narration I am also not punctuating this sentence in purpose to drive my point home
Bottom line: great content, but frustrating editing almost defeats the purpose of this book.

The content is excellent, a topic I’m very interested in. Maryann Sullivan is credited for the narration but this has to be a computer generated voice, it is awful and has ruined it entirely. The pacing is bizarre, an exercise or reflection is suggested yet there is not even a pause for breath, computers don’t breath I guess. Just awful.
