Ten months of total war have taken their toll on humanity.

The unrelenting pace of combat operations is whittling everyone down. Liam is fed up with always being on the defensive. Chi and Jericho’s relationship is beginning to fray at the edges. Even Whimsby is beginning to show signs of (heaven forbid it) insufficient bandwidth.

As the Deathbringers flit from one end of the universe to the other, pushing back against constant probing attacks by the Ferox, Liam is required to be on nearly every operation. His ability to sense and locate Wraith Graves is integral to the war effort. And yet, Liam still feels like he’s not doing enough. Mainly because Command says he’s too valuable to risk, and therefore won’t let him fight.

No. He just has to sit there and watch everyone else die.

Amid those ever-rising casualties, new generations of Deathbringers are being pushed into combat with less and less training. Seres Champlain, reinstated and recently promoted to chief, knows the perils of this strategy. Because while it might bolster their ranks in the short term, it’s really hard to keep a squad of barely trained newbies alive. In fact, she’s failing pretty badly in that regard.

Humanity needs help, and they need it fast.

Following a particularly devastating loss, Liam learns that the All-Kind have found a suitable candidate species to become humanity’s allies: a species called the Sulti. This might seem like a stroke of luck, except the Sulti have fought the Deathbringers before, and there is no love lost between them.

But they’re going to have to put all that behind them. Because the Sulti Empire, which spans thousands of populated worlds, is where the Ferox have chosen to mount a full-scale invasion.

As everything begins to unravel amid lies, betrayal, and intergalactic politics, Liam and his fellow Deathbringers–as well as one very old AI–must prove what they’re made of, or the very fabric of existence may be torn ... and all hell will quite literally break loose.

The end isn’t coming. It’s already here.

D.J. Molles delivers a gripping, relentless narrative in The Coming Dark series. From the first chapter, the story pulls you in with its high stakes, tense pacing, and morally complex characters. What stood out most to me wasn’t just the action, though it’s intense and well-written, but the surprising depth of emotional connection it fostered. The characters are flawed, human, and believable, and the situations they face are brutal yet authentic. Against the backdrop of a collapsing world, Molles manages to draw out genuine empathy, making you care about people you might not have in a different setting. It’s rare for a series to balance adrenaline fueled storytelling with such emotional resonance, but this one nails it.

The story actually created real Empathy for me

This is such a good series! Highly recommended. Hard core military sci-fi with great storytelling, likable but complex characters and plenty of action.

Didn’t want it to end

only downside to this series is that Christian Rummel isn't narrating this one, otherwise it's great, just miss whimsby's original voice

wish Christian Rummel was narrating this continuation of the series

D.J. Molles..... what a fantastic writer and storyteller! I am constantly impressed with his narration and ability to craft dialogue. These two talents are linked, but not the same. Mr. Molles excels at both.

This story continues "The Coming Dark" series which was so wonderfully started in part I. I don't do plot summaries for great books because I don't want to give away anything, even inadvertently. So I will limit this review to the overall tenor of the book.

It takes place in circumstances that we can all envision - the future, humans forging ever onward, conflict, and obstacles. Molles takes time to explain those things that are new to the story (space suits, spatial travel) but doesn't over explain them or under explain them either. You get the sense that you know enough without having comprehensive knowledge of each new thing - and that is the perfect balance. It allows the story to progress without over extensive exposition and permits the pacing to be perfect. Honestly, there wasn't a time in this book (or the previous one for that matter) where I was ever saying to myself "Come on! Get on with it!" I was interested in every scene, every sidebar, and every character. There are very few authors who can do what Molles can do with a story and I am so glad I stumbled on book one. I cannot wait for book three to come out and will gladly spend a credit on it, even if the book is coming out in a year. I really don't want to miss it.

The narrator was great too! The voices were so well done that I didn't need the story to tell me who was talking - I could tell just by the voice he was using. A rare gift. During narrative sections, the pacing was great and I never got tired of listening to him talk.

I would highly recommend anything by Molles, especially these two books, and would not hesitate to get another book narrated by Scott Aiello.

Part II Continues the Excellent Story

This book is filled with gritty characters full of fault and conviction. The narration by Scott Aiello was top notch, giving each character their own verbal personality. I’m putting him up there with Nick Podehl.

The action was gripping and constant themes of morality and consequence makes the story believable.

The bad being is bad but not without cause. The good guys were good, but not without error. If you’re looking for knights in shining armor, look elsewhere. These troops are born from necessity. And a where necessity requires questionable actions, you end up with some questionable people with good intentions.

Check it out and the Godbreaker series (if you want a great, 3-part, well-narrated back story). You won’t be disappointed.

A roaring story that makes you think

I thought this book was better than the first by a small margin. I am looking forward to the next installment! It’s fun violence written clearly by someone who understands the mentality. Recommend fully
