Publisher's summary

The worst day of your life might be just around the corner. Are you ready? Mine came on June 10, 2017. We were on vacation in Michigan when my husband suffered a sudden cardiac arrest after a morning run. When he didn’t show up for breakfast at our inn, I called the police, and soon two squad cars roared into the driveway revealing what I feared. He had died, a witness had performed CPR, an ambulance had come quickly and a pulse had been restored after five shocks from an AED. Because he went without oxygen for an extended time, he suffered hypoxic brain injury. Nobody could tell me if or when he would recover. We spent weeks in the ICU and months in rehabilitation facilities before he was finally able to return home.

Memories play important roles in this story. Our memories and recollections of people, places, and events that happened during a time of intense trauma and drama may not be fully accurate or complete. My husband, the central figure in this story, lost the ability to remember events during approximately five months of 2017, due to brain injury after a prolonged lack of oxygen following sudden cardiac arrest. Together we have done our best to share this story based upon the most memorable moments we have deemed significant. We offer suggestions from this experience to help our listeners prepare for those inevitable worst days so that they not only survive, but thrive. Join us on this journey of love, faith, and the power of connected healing.

Highly recommend this beautiful story!

My husband & I both listened on a recent road trip. It made our trip fly by! It captivated us from the 1st chapter until the very end, and we were so glad it had a happy ending. Love is a powerful force, as this book proved. Betsy & George described their ordeal so it felt like you were there, but more commendable was how they illustrated their solutions to every obstacle & their never give up attitude. It was inspiring to hear how they were able to work through adversity together, through their deep love & trust for each other. We also loved that the book was read by the authors, this made it so much more interesting!

The Comeback

This book is truly an incredible story of love, faith and healing. It would be an invaluable reference for anyone whose loved one has suffered from brain injury as a result of cardiac arrest. But equally important was learning about the self-care and healing practices that Betsy maintained in order to provide the high level of care for her husband as he healed. Caregivers need care too.

A Family's Fight to do Just That -

Loved it! Cried at times, for sadness and grief but also those small victories. I especially love the very personal victory of the first time George kissed Betsy during his recovery - a sweet and poignant moment.

They shared extremely personal moments and struggles that I think many authors would not have added. However, I believe that it's these particular struggles that will get to the heart of pain and confusion other families have during a heartbreaking illness or accident within their own circle of love.

One especially heartwrenching story is how Mandy reacted by choosing to stay planted in the ICU waiting room, unable to see her Father, I'm sure her hero, in bed in a coma hooked up to all kinds of wires and machines.

You can follow her story through the book and see if the content of her Father's Day letter to her Dad was ever revealed. Where did this Father/Daughter relationship go? Did it flourish or wither?

I won't spoil that storyline or any others for you. I'll let you unwrap that one for yourself.
