Publisher's summary

The City of God is one of the most important works of Christian history and philosophy ever written. The writings of St. Augustine are as intriguing to the casual reader as it is to Christian researchers. St. Augustine's work provides insight into Western thought and the development of Western civilizations. The City of God provides the reader with an artful contrast between earthy cities and those in heaven as a representation of the eternal struggle between good and evil. The City of God was originally penned in the early 5th century as a response to the prevalent belief that Christianity was to blame for the fall of Rome. St. Augustine is known as one of the most influential Fathers of the Catholic Church. Born November 13, 354, Augustine would eventually be recognized as a Saint by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Christian Church, and the Anglican Communion.

Wonderful Performance

Getting through this lengthy book was not as hard as I had originally envisioned because Augustine's City of God is a wonderful scholarly masterpiece comprised of philosophy, theology, and cultural examination. It is tragic, thought-provoking, and packed with wisdom. The narration by David McCallion was spectacular from start to finish and made the read go by much quicker than anticipated.

The City of God

Extensive detail and self examination of who God is or should be. The examination is tied closely with the Bible and the Christian God Yahweh, his son and the Holy Spirit. Heavy reading and deep thought is required by the reader.

Narration could not have been better.

If Augustine's works tickles your cognition in a pleasurable way, this reading of The City of God will not let you down. The performance is stellar and i can't recommend this version enough. Whether Augustine's tone of writing of interest is an entirely different matter. He was an opinionated man with an awe-inspiring clarity of thought. I am far from at peace with my faith and consider myself to have no religious inclination in me, yet the wonderful composition of Augustine's writing and his ability to express brutal honesty in the most comforting way had me at attention for several hours each day to continue my travels through worlds of knowledge that is Augustine's The City of God.

Amazing Treatise!

Considering the clarity of thought in this book (actually it was originally 22 books), it is rather surprising to me that it was written in the 5th century. This was unquestionably a great labor of love on St Augustine's part.

David McCallion did a superb job reading the text of this very lengthy audiobook. He deserves commendation for his excellent performance!

Great book.

St.Augustine was a genius his outlook on scripture and the world is eye opening. A must read for any Christian looking to deepen their understanding of Scripture and the world that we live in or anyone who is interested in n philosophy. The first few chapter's are a little rough though he goes deep into Roman life and Gods probably more than we need to know but relevant in his time. After those chapters the book takes off and you get to see the true genius of Augustine.

Great

Wonderful to find such a classic so well narrated. It's an older translation but still very effective and not hard to understand.

Quite an incredible and realistic voice. I felt as if the Great Saint Augustine himself was teaching me. Loved it!

Thank you God for Saint Augustine & the listen.

An astonishing intellect and spirit filled guide is St. Augustine, and the narrative reader was superb. I've had weeks of daily listening pleasure, enthralled and elevated. I repeat that experience again, after a short period of digestion. Simply beautiful.
