Publisher's Summary

As Christmas approaches, everything seems to be falling into place for Dossie. Her son Clem and his adorable five-year-old son Jakey have moved to Cornwall to be closer to her. She runs her own successful catering business. All she needs now is for the run of bad luck in her romantic life to end. Forming a slightly unconventional family setup with Dossie are the jovial nuns of the local convent and the wonderfully eccentric Janna. With humour, kindness and a deep need of somewhere to belong, they form a tight bond. But will this close-knit unit who so depend on each other still be together next Christmas?

A gentle tale evoking images of Cornwall

Despite the start being a little confusing I really warmed to this book. The story is entertaining and kept my interest throughout.

Gentle story, beautifully read

I really enjoyed this story - my first book from this author.

Good pace, well read - great accents - lovely structure.

An ideal read for the Christmas period :)

Catching, a lovely little story, quite delightfull

I'm so glad Audible had this as a advent offer. I'd never have happened upon it otherwise. The story builds up wonderfull and loveble characters that gradually evolve through a year of changes. I found myself interested and warmed by their journey and when the story ended I wanted more. The narration is mild and unobtrusive, clearly conveying the characters through subtle changes in tone and accents. A well worth read and especially apt for the season.

Middle class Christmas?

A warm tale about life in rural Cornwall. I persevered with this book expecting a Christmas miracle. Unfortunately it never really happened. I felt that there should have been some sort of crescendo, I even listened to the last couple of chapters again thinking that I must have missed something. In all, if you you're not looking for anything too exciting, it's an excellent choice! It is well read and for the 'price' I really cannot complain.

If your a fan of Marcia Willet, you'll love this.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Christmas Angel to be better than the print version?

As I have not read it in print I really shouldn't comment. I enjoyed the narrated version very much.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The small grandchild was quite endearing in this.

What about Phyllida Nash’s performance did you like?

I like Phyllida's renditions, they seem down to earth and no unnecessary nonsense. The story is important, so a good narrator should blend with it.

Far too slow

Would you try another book written by Marcia Willett or narrated by Phyllida Nash?

I found that the story-line proceded much too slowly for my liking, and after two and a half hours of perseverance, I finally gave up. It was my first book by Marcia Willett and I'm not likely to try another if this is her writing style. Others may enjoy the minute detail she gives to every aspect of the story, but for me, I just grew impatient for the story to begin.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I couldn't say that I gained a liking for any of the people in the story because their characters just hadn't developed by the time I gave up on it.

What does Phyllida Nash bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I have enjoyed Phyllida Nash's narration of other books but found the voice she gave the child in the story really grated on me.

Was The Christmas Angel worth the listening time?

I have listened to some tremendous books on Audible, but sadly this was one of the very few that I gave up on.

Any additional comments?

I don't like giving a bad review, and judging by previous reviews a lot of people have enjoyed this book. Unfortunately it just wasn't for me.

The Christmas Angel - Sparkling storytelling!

Thank you Audible for suggesting The Christmas Angel. A very pleasurable listen. The story contains a fascinating selection of characters, and a varied selection of sub-plots, not all that easy to grab hold of straight away but once one gets hold of them they are tremendous fun. A fascinating look at life from a slightly different perspective. Well read by Phyllida Nash. A few points in the recording where pauses have been left out, which slightly spoiled the overall experience, but this is definitely one recording that I will be listening too again. Highly recommended.

Good story for the Christmas hols

I listened to this over the Christmas holidays and whilst not being set purely at Christmas it was a very fitting book. It is a book which deals with relationships - friendships, love, family. I found that I was finding things to do (including cleaning) to justify listening to it. It is not too meaty but is a good holiday listen.

Lovely story

Sweet Christmas story with lots of loveable characters. Sad at times but overall an upbeat tale about the importance of a loving family.
