Story
The Compliance Authority does not take kindly to dissidents. Particularly dissidents who have managed to escape their grasp, not once, but twice. Things are about to get a lot more dangerous for Robin, Jace, and their team. Making it all the more urgent to figure out what, if anything, Nathan is hiding - as well as if their convenient allies are, in fact, allies. Because there's only one thing Robin can be sure of right now.... The farther they walk along this tightrope of a life they've found themselves trapped in, the thinner the line becomes.

Story
I celebrated when vampires were declared extinct. Those beasts had preyed on humanity for millennia, committing senseless, brutal murders. Like the rest of my colleagues at the Occult Bureau, I looked forward to a world where we could all sleep at night - where constant cover-up jobs were no longer required to keep the public calm and unaware. But the end of vampires wasn't the end of our problems. It was only the beginning.

But when he sees the mysterious man following Natalie again the very next day, he can no longer disbelieve his eyes. Although she denies the man's existence, Alex sees her walking with him down a road in his neighborhood he's never seen before - and can't help but follow.

Harley Merlin can sense people's emotions, among other things. It's how she snagged her first job pinpointing cheaters at a casino. But she has no clue where she got these freakish powers because she spent her childhood jumping from home to home in the foster system, and her father left her with nothing more than a cryptic note. Then she crosses paths with a terrifyingly real monster. Which is when a mysterious and annoyingly arrogant young warlock named Wade Crowley steps in, introducing her to a hidden world of beasts, magicals, and covens riddled with secrets.

There will come a day when love will mark you as a traitor. In a society where emotions are nothing and function is everything, Avlyn Lark is just trying to blend in. She's lucky to be alive, unlike her twin brother Ben who died when they were four. And she's lucky to have been taken from her biological parents and assigned to a Level Two family. But mastering her emotions? That's a problem, especially when a rebel bomb blows up a building right in front of her. Then on Configuration Day, Avlyn's official transition to adulthood, she starts seeing strange visions. And instead of being placed with a low-level tech company where she could hide away, she's hired by Genesis Technologies, the government firm that monitors every citizen. Now, instead of blending in, Avlyn fears she'll be exposed for what she really is.

In the future, mankind has learned to manipulate their DNA, harnessing only the good genes, like intelligence, strength, and height. They called this prime DNA and humans rushed to get these new pDNA injections, which gave them superhuman-like qualities. Centuries later, however, their DNA became so engineered that humans rarely lived past the age of 30, thanks to a new deadly disease called the Kiss. The only cure is to receive an injection of oDNA, DNA from an Original human that hasn't been genetically altered. Problem is there aren't many Originals left.

Publisher's Summary
The heart-pounding second audiobook of The Child Thief series.
After the night’s shocking events, Robin, Jace, and their team find themselves thrust into a race for their lives.
Robin never could have imagined that things would go so wrong. Never could have dreamed they would find what they found within that innocuous-looking building.
And now it’s too late: They’ve seen what they’ve seen, and there is no time to talk. No time to even think. Not with the caliber of people who are now on their trail. Fleeing is their priority - but even if they escape, it’s uncertain whether they will ever truly be free.
Because there’s one thing Robin and her comrades can now count on: The deeper they dig in this strange world that was once called “the United States”, the darker the shadows become....

I liked her other work better
I've listened to and read several other of Bella Forrest books, and I found this one to be not as exciting and engaging as for example the gender game was. this serious seems to take too long to get rolling. in this book they spent so much time planning the main event, but I'd rather just get to the main event sooner without so much hemming and hawing. with the gender game and the girl who dared to think series I could barely put them down, I would stay in my car longer so that I could finish a chapter or hear what happens next. I just wasn't as on the edge of my seat with this one

booksplaining
the first book in this series was pretty good but I just couldn't finish this one and I hate to leave a series unfinished. the author got to the point where she was over explaining everything. she doesn't show you anything through the story. it's all very plainly explained over and over again and most of the time the main character Robin explains something, then she explained that another character agrees with her and explains why, then explains that someone else doesn't agree and explains why, then goes through both sides to explain the different opinions. I kept listening hoping it would get better but when I had only 2 hours left in the book I realized that almost nothing had actually happened and decided not to waste anymore time. I don't know what happened to make the first book pretty good and the second book so annoying but I couldn't finish it.

Mixed Emotions
I finished this book pretty fast within days, mainly because it is nonstop action. The narrator does a really good job in changing the voices and the pace of it all - so that was good. However the main character is who I have issues with, she's just very predictable, her thoughts are all over the place - I don't like her. I had to read this book after reading the first one, to get closure. I do have to give credit to the author though because now I have to read the 3rd one after reading this one, a little frustrating though as well because what hooked me with The Child Thief STILL hasn't been solved or close to it.
