Publisher's summary

Cornelius Armstrong is a detective inspector in Edwardian Carlisle. In the first of these two adventures, Armstrong investigates the brutal murder of a young Italian immigrant on the corner of West Walls and Dean Tait's Lane in November 1903. In doing so, Cornelius uncovers a far wider web of underworld crime. In the second case, the reciting of ghost stories in front of a blazing fire at an innocent Christmas party inadvertently leads the detective into a trail of betrayal and deceit that dates back some 600 years to the death of King Edward I on Burgh Marsh.

solid mystery duo

I enjoy historical fiction in a good mystery format and the first story in this audiobook was pretty good all around. It dealt with the murder of a young man and the listener was able to follow along with the protagonist as he discovered clues. The second story took a while to reveal what the actual mystery was going to be about but it ended up a good story also. I usually like different character perspectives but in the second story, it didn't really work. I had a hard time following along with the time jumps to the past. I did end up liking it more than I thought I would.

Steve White is an excellent narrator who manages to have distinctly different voices for each of his characters. He's able to do a female voice very well. I always like it when a voice actor can do the opposite gender without a distracting voice strain. Steve White did the straight reading parts with pauses in the right places and was clear and understandable. A voice actor who has exceptional talent in doing many different voices and accents!
