Freddy Falcón is my kind of detective. A fiery red headed geek that is too smart for his own good. I was surprised to learn he has never left the state of Georgia. He has to solve a murder of a famous movie director with a handful of possible suspects.

I loved the 70s and 80s references. Also believe it or not a serious murder mystery can also be funny. There is also LGBT representation.

I hope the author continues the series.

A murder mystery well done

So this book came recommended by a friend. My first and only noir was Casablanca and I loved it. However I typically just don’t like the tropes that come with noir and follow procedural instead. It took me a few chapters in to let go of murder procedures and learn about the characters. And that’s what is fun about this book. The characters have a small southern town feel for the most part. It plays to categorical stereotypes in a way that I can visualize. The lazy cop, the righteous cop, the mysterious histories of the characters when the story needs it, but it never feels out of place or over done.

This feels like a collection of the authors experiences with said categories and that started to hook me in. What really made it enjoyable was the deep nerd references. We have movie quotes, inter monologue references, and even techmo bowl style passwords. Oh and a genius well worked Konami joke. That one took me a minute to get and it was the best!

This book has heart and that’s what I love about it. I became invested in the characters as they felt true in a lot of ways. I recommend this as a “cozy murder” type story. Much like cozy fantasy you throw some rules away, follow others, and enjoy the ride.

I don’t read noir and I loved this.

R. B. Willis creator world filled with Rich and diverse characters you could easily find yourself running into in real life. It’s just as good as a second read as it was the first time I read this. Yes, I have read this at least three times now. Being able to listen to it, a completely new and interesting element to the storytelling process. It’s an awesome read and I cannot wait to see what happens to “the great Freddy falcon.“
