Publisher's Summary

A captain seeking to repair the past and the daughter of a fallen gentleman, searching for a treasure that will change their lives forever.

The end of the Napoleonic wars comes as a relief to Caspar Graysmark, but before he can settle into the comfortable life of an English lord he has a duty to the people of France. A treasure lies hidden in the heart of the forest, stolen gold that would save the lives of many who lost everything during the war. In his quest, Caspar stumbles across a hidden cottage in the woods, and a different sort of treasure altogether.

Scarlett, living with her sister and grandmother, belongs nowhere. Her father’s mistakes led to their exile from England and their banishment into the forest. The cold winter months have taken their toll on Scarlett’s spirits and her grandmother’s health. The Englishman who arrives at Scarlett’s door, looking more like a bear than a captain of the British army, reminds her of all she lost to the war.

With winter drawing to a close, Caspar must find the missing gold, but his quest to right the wrongs of war has changed. Can Scarlett let him rescue her, too?

The Captain and Miss Winter is based on the story of Snow White and Rose Red, as recorded by the Brothers Grimm. It is a sweet/clean romance novella, and is Book 2 in a series of Regency retellings. The stories can be heard in any order.

A favorite fairy tale retelling

I enjoyed this short fairy tale retelling! The narrator and accents definitely brought to life the different characters of the story!

Lovely Regency adaptation of Rose Red & Snow White

The original fairytale was once a favorite of mine, but I really enjoyed this Regency version. It's a little subdued, with a bit of suspenseful tension near the end, but charming all the way through.

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses

[The narrator's voice is pleasant & her accent fits well with the story. She does a great job of distinguish between characters' voices]

Sweet

A pleasurable listen - free from the typical dribble in this genre. Clean and with likable characters. I hope this author keeps writing these historical romances.

Immensely enjoyable!

This was a short listen, but very enjoyable! The characters were well developed, and the story kept my interest at every turn.
I felt that the narrator did a wonderful job of easily switching between character voices, so as to make it easy to understand/follow, but without making too much of a show of it.
I would highly recommend this book to all.

Fabulous retelling of Snow white and Rose Red!

Story: 5 stars

Fairy tale retellings are a favorite genre of mine and this was excellently done! So many elements of the original fairy tale and yet so original in how they are incorporated! A wonderful romance where we are invested in all three women, not just Scarlett. Casper is honorable and swoon-worthy.

Narration: (4.5 stars)

Ms. Boyd has a calm and soothing quality to her voice that makes you look forward to her narration. I’d be interested to see if she has any other accents under her belt: her acting voices for Grandmother and Casper are very well done!

Loved this retelling

I'd read this retelling before and loved it so when I was given the opportunity to listen to the audio version I was delighted. The narrator, Jessica Elisa Boyd, was perfect. A great listen for when you just have a few hours as it isn't long. Here is my review of the book I originally wrote.

I have only recently discovered Ms. Britton's works and have enjoyed reading them. This is a regency era retelling of The Brothers Grimm story of Snow White and Rose Red, a fairy tale I was not familiar with. It is not Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I had to look this one up to review the story.

I think Ms. Britton did a good job keeping to the original story yet making it different. She gave a believable reason to put three English women in post-war France for an Englishman to find. It was clean, sweet and entertaining. In the brief space of a novella the characters had a convincing insta-attraction that led to falling in love (as opposed to just having insta-love). It was a sweet happily ever after ending.

I enjoyed the first in this series as well so I'm looking forward to reading more.

Sex: a few kisses
Language: no
Violence: threatened with a knife- mild

*I received an advance copy of the book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Slowly unfurling love story

Their stories were interesting, the setting perfect to not distract from anything. Always adore when kind, and gentle characters are the focus.

Magical Retelling of Snow White and Rose Red

Story was exceptionally well written, it is not often that you will find such a complete story in a novella. Wonderful character development. The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life and adding depth to each character. Highly recommend.

Another great novel by Britton

This was a truly sweet, clean and feel good story. Set in France during the Regency era, it incorporates all of the components that I enjoy! Intrigue, suspense, humour and romance - include a spunky, beautiful heroine and a kind, handsome hero along with a doting grandmother and observant, no-nonsense little sister.... what’s not to love?!
I have enjoyed every one of Sally Britton’s books and this one is no different. Excellently narrated by the talented Jessica Elisa Boyd, this story is a pleasure to listen to.
