Publisher's summary

An electrifying account of the Cali Cartel beyond its portrayal on Netflix.

From the ashes of Pablo Escobar's empire rose an even bigger and more malevolent cartel. A new breed of sophisticated mobsters became the kings of cocaine. Their leader was Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela - known as the Chess Player due to his foresight and calculated cunning.

Gilberto and his terrifying brother, Miguel, ran a multi-billion-dollar drug empire like a corporation. They employed a politically astute brand of thuggery and spent $10 million to put a president in power. Although the godfathers from Cali preferred bribery over violence, their many loyal torturers and hit men were never idle.

Excellent book!

The book answered every question I had about what really took place in Columbia during the reign of these cartels.
Very, very interesting and the narration was fabulous. Clear and precise.
Filled in much more of the "real" story the movie series Narcos did. I enjoyed hearing the full story.
Well written and well received!

Fantastic

I couldn't rest until I got to the end of the book. The story of the Columbian drug godfathers is hot. These guys are ruthless living no stone unturned to remain on top. Sophisticated and well organized. They are better organized than most governments in central America. Thank you Shaun Attwood.

A darn-tootin good Audible book!

What did you love best about The Cali Cartel?

Attwood keeps the story flowing, interesting and suspenseful. I learned a lot of interesting knowledge.

What does John H Fehskens bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He branches out realistically in different voices for the various characters, I believe he was a great choice as a narrator

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I can't exactly call it a "page turner", haha, but it took me less than two days to finish and I continued listening whenever I had the chance - in the car, at the gym, in cooking, laying in bed before falling asleep, ect.

Any additional comments?

This is another win for Shaun Attwood and I recommend it!

Well worth a listen for any fans of the Netflix series who want to go beyond the drug war mythology.

The Corporate Colombian Mafia

Pablo Escobar’s downfall, getting into politics, helped the Cali Cartel. With the spotlight on Pablo, the Cali Cartel ran their business like McDonald’s complete with franchises. Another fast-paced book by Attwood. I recommend all of them in his war on drugs series.

The accent....

I like the story and format however I think the pronunciations of the Spanish names are terrible. This book should of been narrated by someone who is fluent in Spanish, even the name Cali is pronounced wrong.

Loved it!

Very interesting viewpoint on the war on drugs. Wanted a little more history/background on the Cali Cartel. But I still learned a lot. The narrations on Escobar was very good and the background on Los Pepes was also good. The viewpoint on the war on drugs at the end was right on point!!!

AMAZING

What made the experience of listening to The Cali Cartel the most enjoyable?

Excellent up-to-date book about the Cali cartel that deconstructs the war on drugs, and is so gripping that you won’t want to put it down
